Anal skin tag removal surgery

Just recovering at home after my surgery this morning to remove two quite large skin tags. Thought I’d share my journey as I read quite a few horror stories on here beforehand of how painful this surgery can be and despite my consultant trying to warn me off, I was absolutely certain I wanted this done.

I had the surgery under GA at 10am and six hours on I’m not feeling any pain or discomfort, in fact no sensations at all so I’m assuming my local anaesthetic hasn’t worn off yet. I’ve only been for a wee so I’ve yet to discover what a bowel movement will bring. I’m holding off taking any painkillers until I started noticing any discomfort. Will update. So far, absolutely over the moon I had this done and feeling so lucky to have the NHS. Everyone was wonderful and I was so well looked after.

It’s just 1 skin tag! Sorry forgot to add. I’ll keep updated xx

Oh wow, so glad I’ve found this thread. I’ve got bloody awful skin tags / piles. I actually went to the doctor last week about them, typical that the day the doctor looked they went right down but they’ve got really bad again. I’m seriously considering surgery so good to read this

Lauren342 · 22/11/2023 10:55

Due for my surgery in a few hours. Feeling quite calm considered I’ve been worried sick for weeks. Quick question, when did people start taking the laxatives? Do I start taking them tonight or wait? I ideally don’t want a bowl movement for at least a day or two but I can’t exactly decide when that will happen.

mrssunshinexxx · 22/11/2023 13:04

Good luck @Lauren342 please report back

Lauren342 · 22/11/2023 13:48

Thankyou so much! I will

Owyabugger · 25/11/2023 08:57

Hey@Lauren342

Wondering how you got on and how you are feeling now? I had my op the day after you and its been a bit rough thus far! 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Lauren342 · 25/11/2023 11:48

Hey I was going to wait until I’m a week post op to do another detailed post. I’m feeling absolutely fine, no pain whatsoever. Never felt so grateful I’m experiencing this. Hopefully it gets better for you

Owyabugger · 25/11/2023 12:42

Omg im so jealous, i feel like someones shoved a cactus up my arse 🫣🤣.

I am pleased for you though X

mrssunshinexxx · 25/11/2023 14:01

Can I ask you both @Owyabugger @Lauren342 did you both hair internal / external or both? We're there are hemorroids or skin tags only ?

SamphireAndSeaGlass · 25/11/2023 14:02

Sorry if this is s stupid question, but are you having this done for cosmetic reasons?

Lauren342 · 25/11/2023 14:26

I had 2 external skin tags. One was quite big and one was very small x

Owyabugger · 25/11/2023 15:12

I had a GA as i got checked for internal at the same time, there were none - had three external skin tags which came off though. All medium in size.

Didn’t have for cosmetic reasons alone, more hygiene.

Everyone heals differently I know but this is intense. Still haven’t even managed to go to the toilet for a BM yet despite three days of laxatives. Something to look forward to?! 😬

Feeling rather sorry for myself today.

mrssunshinexxx · 25/11/2023 15:23

Thanks for your honesty @Owyabugger but sorry you aren't having an easier time. The recovery really scares me x

Owyabugger · 25/11/2023 15:26

@mrssunshinexxx everyone is different I guess and im sure position of the tags etc all play a part as well.

I knew it was going to be an uncomfortable recovery but its hard to know how it will turn out without just going for it. I will just have to keep up with the painkillers and try to not let it get me down! X

Lauren342 · 25/11/2023 15:48

I’m genuinely so shocked. I’ve spent months worrying myself sick over this I can’t believe there’s no pain whatsoever. I’m so confused but so grateful. I hope you have a speedy recovery

Obviousbutinevitablenamechange · 05/12/2023 22:55

To all those who just had this surgery last month, how is the pain now? How is the recovery going in general?

Kittykatmeow · 06/12/2023 11:18

I’m thinking about going to my GP this week to see if mine can be removed. I’ve two external skin tags and I’ve a feeling she’ll make me go private…. Which I can’t afford 😣

ceecee32 · 06/12/2023 11:54

Thank you for this thread. I finally plucked up the courage to see GP about my skin tags. I take a lot of medication and thought that my 3+ BM a day was a result and I was really struggling to keep myself clean.
Faster than the speed of light I was referred by my GP and saw the consultant 5 days later. I have 5 external skin tags, he thought it likely that it was due to medication but to make sure I'm having a camera test next week (3 weeks after seeing GP).
He said that he was going to ask for them to be banded at the same time but if that didn't work would have to have surgery.
Not looking forward to any of it but I know it needs to be done.

mrssunshinexxx · 26/01/2024 08:25

Anyone recently had this done ? Got my consultation letter through this morn and freaking about it as not currently causing me pain so forgetting how bad it can get

Owyabugger · 27/01/2024 18:32

I had mine sorted towards the end of November. No regrets at all but it is an uncomfortable recovery. If you are prepared in advance you can be on the ball with helping yourself heal and be comfortable. That said, everyone is different and heals differently, it might be a walk in the park. Go for it! X

mrssunshinexxx · 27/01/2024 20:01

@Owyabugger can you give me any more info pls ? I think I have one hemmoroid and 4 skin tags all external. Thanks kids!
Were you Put to sleep for it ? This is the part I'm dreading I don't want to be awake

Owyabugger · 27/01/2024 21:17

Of course, I had 4 tags and some internal Haemorrhoids too. I was asleep for the procedure and woke up with two partly stitches and two open wounds (tags) and then internal stuff was all banded. Took maybe an hour. It was painful when I woke but the hospital gave me a load of painkillers and sent me on my way with a two week sick note. Which I did need.

Lauren342 · 27/01/2024 22:05

I’m currently 9 weeks post op. Had a painless recovery. Still can’t believe it as I worried myself sick over reading some of the stories on here. It looks so much better down there now, one tiny pink lump which I think is the last of the swelling hoping it goes soonish. So worth it. Good luck :)

Tozin · 27/01/2024 22:54

I’m booked in for anal skin tag removal in March.
I’m going privately to a hightstreet clinic.
I’m trying to work out why mine is simply a local anaesthetic (they will be cauterised) and I’m able to drive home after?

Everyone else on this thread seems to have had a GA. This worries me?

fyi I had under hemmoroidectomy surgery 1 year ago under GA and it was pretty unpleasant for a few weeks after. But I assumed skin tags would be a lot simpler?!

mrssunshinexxx · 28/01/2024 06:36

God I hope I have your experience @Lauren342

Thanks @Owyabugger no sick note here I'm a sahm but hoping my husband can book a week off and take over. I'm mega nervous about how embarrassing it is ??? does it really hurt to have a BM afterward and did you adapt your diet at all before ?
GA always makes me meg out of it and sick but I'd do not want to be kept awake
