What (if any) is the difference between dihydrocodeine and codeine as far as pain relieving properties are concerned?

Is one stronger or more effective than the other?
TIA

Im not a doc but Iv taken both and dihydrcodeine is stronger, than just codeine. But a word of warning it make you very drzy

kittywise · 03/02/2008 17:39

Ha, ha, yes it does!
I've been given some 30mg of codeine and paracetamol but it doesn't really help. My mum gave me some 30mg dihydrocodeine and it's helping much more with the pain, but I am away with the fairies

Dihydrocodeine is much stronger than codeine. What sort of pain do you have?

summersun06 · 03/02/2008 17:53

Ouch! Have you been to your GP? I'm sure you can use amitriptyline for that but I might be wrong!!!!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 03/02/2008 18:42

I was on dihyrdocodine (10mg) and it wasn't doing anything, GP put me on kapake which is 30mg of codeine plus paracetamol, and its stronger than the dihhydrocodeine I was on.

Gp also gave me amitriptyline but I read the side effects and decided against taking it. The kapake is working better.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 03/02/2008 18:46

If you look on netdoctor it says that co-dydramol which is the old tablets I was on containing dihydrocodeine is for mild-mod pain.

But kapake is for severe pain.

My GP said that co-dydramol with 10mg of dihydrocodeine is not buch better than over the counter paracetamol.

kittywise · 03/02/2008 19:17

stripey, the dihydrocodeine of my mum's is 30mg and it appears to be stronger than the kapake, which I also have.

McDreamy, I started taking amitriptyline but they switched it to carzamazepine as I'm still bf. Either way they make me gaga .

It's really horrible pain, I feel like I've got acute tooth ache in all my lower right teeth and my jaw feels like it's been punched.

anyone else?

Hi I take Solpadol which is another 30mg of codeine and paracetamol mix I also take 150mg of amitriptyline at night. These are for a variety of illnesses including clinical depression, a prolapsed disc or two in my lower back, osetoarthritis and fibromyalgia -and I wonder why I feel so tired and spaced out all the time. On the plus side my pain is minimal and under control at the moment or perhaps I just can't feel it because I'm so drugged up.

kittywise · 03/02/2008 22:27

yes, it is a pay off isn't it? You have it far, far worse then me. I thought that the side effects of the drugs was supposed to lessen with time. is that not so then?

Kittywise Hi, I'm never really sure what are side effects or just symptoms of the many illnesses I have but I don't feel I have any other side effects apart from the 2 I mentioned which I can live with because for me the benefits out weigh the side effects. I wouldn't say I'm worse off than yourself in fact I have a pretty good quality of life at the moment compared to other people I know or people who post on here. We are all different with our own problems and ways of coping with them IMO pain is one of the hardest symptoms to describe to another person as everybodies pain threshold and perception of it is different. From what I understand the pain you have can be extremely bad.
