My 13m old has now been having high temperatures for over 2.5 week. Started as high temperatures with no obvious cause. Went to the GP after a couple of days, and they said ear infection and prescribed amoxicillin 250mg 3xday for 5 days. Temperatures went down after a day of this, but not back to normal, then after the antibiotics back up to 38/39 and this has been going on over a week since antibiotics were finished. During antibiotics developed a cough and a snotty nose.
Called GP just after coming off antibiotics and temperature had gone up and spoke on phone - they weren't concerned, and have said cough and snot symptoms could account for temperatures. Took her back to GP 3 days ago and they said viral (ears still a bit pink, but didn't think bacterial).
It feels like it is going on forever and I'm worried there that perhaps antibiotics didn't fully clear a bacterial infection, and that what is driving the high temperatures. Of course is could be viral, but would that drive high temperatures for this long? Could be a second viral infection, as she did go to nursery, on a couple of days when her temperature was going down with the antibiotics. Just can't help feeling it is worth a go with different antibiotics, after all this time, just incase a bacterial infection is contributing to this.
Is anyone experiencing similar with a small child and seen temperatures go on and on? In our shoes would you go back to GP? Just not sure how long to wait. Her cough appears to be getting slowly worse, but her nose a little less snotty. She is sticking her fingers in her ears at times.
(We dose her with nurofen and calpol when her temperature goes back up, after the previous dose)
Any thoughts, ideas or your own similar experiences would be welcome, as we haven't experienced anything like this before (she had covid 2 months ago, and that was easier)
