High iron levels

Hi everyone,

Partner had a blood test. Everything was fine apart from high iron levels (43). I think they said the cut off for normal was 30 or 33, I can’t remember.

So they’ve done repeat blood tests which we get the results of tomorrow or Wednesday.

Anyone any experience on what can cause this?

Thanks.

Am sure there may be various possible causes but the only one I know about is hemachromatosis.

I did read up about that.

It's good that he's having more blood tests. My dh has the same with very high levels which have increased over time, but his GP has had little interest and the only 'therapy' has been to donate blood to keep levels down a little. He's finally having some more tests and might be referred to a haematologist but that's not certain. His symptoms are diverse - tiredness, poor skin, bad sleeping, and joint pain.

What level was your partners iron?

I think they did mention the repeat blood tests then refer to haematology if needed.

So will have to wait on the blood results this week.

Partner has been feeling really tired. It’s crazy as he has actually had low iron & b12 in the past which I know correlates with tiredness/dizziness etc but we didn’t know if high iron causes that. So it’s crazy we’re experiencing the opposite now.

I'll try and find out his level and let you know. Whatever it was I know it was always below the threshold for NHS label of 'abnormal' though in other countries such as the US it would be. Frustrating - and this has been for about 10 years. People often think high iron must be a good thing, but it can be very damaging to your whole body. I'm no expert, only what I've learned via dh. I hope your partner gets some help.

My dad has a condition called Hyperferritinemia where his iron levels are too high. Doesn't make him feel bad but he regularly needs to have blood taken out to bring the level down.

My dh is currently being investigated for coeliac disease and sleep apnoea - GP is looking for the cause of the blood problems.
