I am not sure where she has got this as i have hardly left the house since she has been born!
The eye drops i have used for dc's when they have had it before are for over two years.
Any ideas what might clear it or is it trip to docs on Monday ?

Breastmilk.

If you are not feeding, find a friend who is and get them to drop some in your dd eyes.

This worked for ds and dp.

breastmilk definitely ! or you can buy drops over the counter at the chemist. when cleaning her eyes use seperate pieces of cotton wool dipped in cooled boiled water and wipe inside corner to out ! i think !

lilyloo · 02/02/2008 12:31

My GP said they often pick it up at birth causing sticky eye in the first few weeks.

I second breast milk, it worked for us. Do check with them if there's no improvement though.

debbiewebweb · 02/02/2008 14:09

Breastmilk when they this small, but if they're older and have no breatmilk around use baby shampoo - the no tears formula - mixed with water.

Heathcliffscathy · 02/02/2008 14:12

i think grumpyzebra is the expert on this....apparently the less you wipe and clean it up the faster the infeciton runs it's course and clears up itself.

i second breastmilk too. and eyebright tincture (neals yard do it) very effective.

mamamufin · 02/02/2008 14:25

I was told tears contain natural healing for mucky eyes. I would suggest a good old cry!

Nip · 02/02/2008 14:26

i heard that breast milk is good, but i never had any as i FF, however i used warm water with just a little salt and i swear by it still (and DS is 22mo). I had the drops which made DS scream his head off, but the salted water, not problem.

PFB moment, i was told this and felt bad about doing it, so i rubbed it in my eyes first and realised it didnt sting!

Use a different piece of cotton wool each time, and clean both eyes often, it will clear up.

Today the other eye is a real mess. It is half closed and looks really swollen around it. It has been weeping all day. I am using the breast milk and cleaning them with cooled boiled water and different cotton wool balls on each eye. The other eye isn't as bad but feel really sorry for her. Should i just carry on what i am doing or would you make doc apt tom ?

LILYLOO - You MUST go to the docs - if it is conjunct...then you need drops that are only avail on prescription, and to leave your little DD with it can cause lasting damage to the eye.

Chances are this is only sticky eye, which is very common and can stick (pardon the pun) around for a while, and breast milk is great for this, but please get your GP to confirm if there is actually any infection (conjunct) or if it's just blocked tear ducts (sticky eye).

Housemum · 03/02/2008 20:43

Lilyloo - the HV told us that if the discharge was greenish it was more likely an infection, so go to docs. If the eye is swollen too, I'd make an appt to be on the safe side. DD3 is 4 weeks now and still has a weepy eye, sometimes is a little crusty on waking up, but discharge is clear so is apparently a blocked tear duct and should clear up around 6 weeks (which is roughly when they should be able to produce real tears).

lilyloo · 03/02/2008 20:47

Thanks ladies it is def green and very sticky although her actual eyeball looks clear and isn't red but the swelling is awful. Will make an apt tom better to be safe i guess.

Definitely - am sure it is still sticky eye - my DS had it and as long as eye is not actually red, most likely it is not infected. The gunk can still look a bit greeny though. My DD did have Conjunct, and it is so awful and uncomfortable for them that it is def worth getting them to docs asap just to be safe - call them and get an emergency appt for Monday.
