Is it OK to drink a can of cider when 18 weeks pregnant

I just have a quick question. It's the start of the Six Nations Rugby Tournament tomorrow and even when not pregnant I only drink very very occasionally, but tend to have a few when watching the rugby. Does anyone know if it is OK to drink just one can of cider would be OK. As yet I haven
't touched a drop throughout this pregnancy and I am currently 18+3. The units on the side of the can say 2.3.
It's the BIG one tomorrow England vs Wales and I would like to 'join in' if at all possible.
Mind you I'll porbably take one sniff and either be under the table, or decide I don't want it anyway

I would.

I did, in fact

Janni · 01/02/2008 22:21

No. Wait till it's born.

paddingtonbear1 · 01/02/2008 22:28

I don't think I'd drink a whole can, tbh.
you could always get some alcohol free stuff, my friend did that when she was pregnant - it tasted ok!

carmenelectra · 01/02/2008 22:29

I would!!

Wisteria · 01/02/2008 22:30

Yes- will be fine...if you like cider!

Lulumama · 01/02/2008 22:30

you could

alcohol does cross the placenta, but everything i have read recently indicates that binge drinking or sustained heavy drinking is damaging. the odd drink might well not be. it is your choice, and it is doubtful it will cause foetal alcohol syndrome, but some health advice is now not to drink at all for the duration of the pregnancy.

Lulumama · 01/02/2008 22:31

i did have the odd drink in my pregnancies, after the first trimester.

Wisteria · 01/02/2008 22:32

the amount that would cross the placenta on one can is very minimal.

carmenelectra · 01/02/2008 22:34

I didnt fancy any in first trimester(most unlike me). Think it was my bodys way of telling me i shouldnt.

WEnt to Tunisia in second trimester and often had a glass or two of wine, even though current guidelines do say zero as lulu said.

K20 · 01/02/2008 22:34

I drank champagne at 18 weeks, the day I got married - DD almost 9 and fine.

I would. Just don't get pi**ed

B1977 · 01/02/2008 22:34

Why not (assumes it is not Diamond White!)

Maidamess · 01/02/2008 22:34

I would too.

I drank the odd glass of wine, odd pint of ale and the occasional gin during both pregnancies and both dds (now 14 and 11) are both A ok.

It's entirely up to you but if you fancy it and it doesn't make you feel sick then go for it...

BITCAT · 01/02/2008 22:38

Given that a baby is fully formed by 12weeks, they are just developing and growing after that and i don't think that 1 can of cider will do baby any harm. I think as long as your sensible about drink when pregnant i don't think the odd glass here and there, ie special occassions, is a problem at all...don't think any more about it!!!

Pheebe · 02/02/2008 07:47

Erm, thats not actually correct BITCAT, their major structures may be in place at 12 weeks but they certainly aren't 'just growing' for the rest of the pregnancy. their internal organs and most importantly their brain is continuing to develop in fact their brain continues to develop after birth as well.
Having said that, one can of cider almost certainly won't be a problem. personally I'd stick to apple juice though

yogimum · 02/02/2008 08:00

I didn't drink at all during my pregnancy. I couldn't stand the smell of the stuff. Made up for it since. . I always followed the american advice which was to avoid alcohol. Its your decision in the end.

twelveyeargap · 02/02/2008 08:13

Go for it, provided you'll actually enjoy it and not worry about anything anyone says about "It's only 9 months, can't you wait?". Blah, blah.

As lulumama says, baby is fully formed, so there really is nothing to worry about unless you're planning some sort of bender.

Interestingly, if you're loaded and having your baby at the Portland and not on the NHS, you're actually told that a glass of wine in the evening is helpful if you have very uncomfortable braxton hicks contractions.
Enjoy the rugby.

FWIW, I'll be watching the Ireland match today with a pint of Guinness.

mother3 · 03/02/2008 21:43

it is very debatable.when i had my children ,many moons ago the mid wife said you can drink but not to excess that you would fall over and hurt you and the baby.It changes all the time but if baby is fully formed it wont hurt him or her.Dont think 1 tin of cider will hurt you or the baby.Good luck with the pregnacy and birth.

BITCAT · 03/02/2008 21:46

Pheebe you will actually see that i did also say that they are developing also, and they are formed all organs in place including brain and certainly 1 can would be ok.

libralady · 04/02/2008 06:27

Thanks for all the advice ladies.

As it was I did open the can and drank some of it, but not the whole can. In the end the game was sooooo exciting and Wales amanged to beat England in their own back yard for the first time in 20 years.
Babba was lively throughout the match but that could have had something to do with me yelling at the TV (don't know what I would have been like if my cousin had come off the bench!)
Looking forward to next weeks match and may well have another small drink.
The biggest one will be when I go the the Millenium Statdium on 15th March for the final match on the final day of the Six Nations at home to France. Although I am the designated driver and never ever touch a drop when driving. Saw Wales v South Africa in November and didn't even comtemplate a drink then (just 8 weeks at that time and again the designated driver!)
When I think back to the times when my Mum and my Nan had their children, ladies still smoked and drank and the majority of children came out OK. You had these 'drugs' for morning sickness and were told yes take them and then the thalidomide (sp?)syndrome occured. It's hard to make an informed decision sometimes when there are so many conflicting views.
Thanks anyway guys.

i would have.

Pheebe · 04/02/2008 13:51

O blimey BITCAT you did you did, I'm so so sorry I misread your post. I never believed baby-brain existed!! Think I'm going to leave mumsnet and return in a few weeks with a brain and new name as I keep misreading, misunderstanding and misrepresenting myself

BITCAT · 05/02/2008 12:07

I didn't mean to sound snotty, i hope it didn't come across that way. I'm always misreading things, i think my brain has almost died off after 4 kiddies!!
