Leading on from another thread, I looked at the salt content on ds's cereal. 30g contains0.2g of sodium, 0.6g of salt. They are Tesco multigrain loops. Is this high or low?

I'm not too sure but bumping for you

Right, according to the Food Standards Agency :

This is A LOT of salt
1.25g salt or more per 100g
(0.5g sodium or more per 100g)

This is A LITTLE salt
0.25g salt or less per 100g
(0.1g sodium or less per 100g)

If a food contains between 0.25g and 1.25g salt (or between 0.1g and 0.5g sodium) per 100g, this is a moderate amount.

kids should have no more salt than 1g per day

I read in a paper recently that the healthiest (low fat, sugar and salt) cereal option for kids is Wheetabix. Cornflakes apparently are high in salt, which I was surprised at!

Pidge · 02/12/2004 16:42

highlander - yes, I read this too, although it depends what cornflakes you buy - the Kellogs ones are not good, not sure about the supermarket own brands, but you can also get health-food shop varieties that are low in salt and sugar. And you can always chop fruit in to make it a bit more exciting for the little ones!

ah, but you can't beat Readybrek - no added sugar or salt, both of which are in Weetabix (though less than in most other cereals) And added iron too....

Meant to say, also from that site:

  • babies - less than 1g salt a day (0.4g sodium)
  • 1 to 3 years - 2g salt a day (0.8g sodium)
  • 4 to 6 years - 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
  • 7 to 10 years - 5g salt a day (2g sodium)
  • 11 and over - 6g salt a day (2.5g sodium)
