DH continuous cough, just about every minute of the day

Just sounds like I’m overacting but it’s relentless, I am getting at my wits end, he’s got a chest infection, he’s quite poorly with other long term health issues, we are now sleeping in separate bedrooms, I’ve hardly any sleep for four nights as I can hear him from down the hall.

he’s on antibiotics, day three today, and there just seems no end to the coughing, I’ve got him doing the breathing thing which helps a bit, honey on a spoon, honey and lemon drinks, paracetamol, keeping warm and hydrated, resting. If he can get to sleep he gets about an hour and then spends two hours coughing continuously. He’s knackered and so am I. Can’t do the steam inhalation (reason would be seriously outing).

we think it’s the virus that seems to be getting everyone, imo it’s worse than when we had Covid a while back.

I am going to ring docs again tomorrow to see if there’s anything else they can do for him, he needs to be well as he’s got other things health wise he needs to recover from.

any thoughts on anything I’ve missed would be much appreciated, just want my lovely husband to get better fast. I’ve had it as well but not as bad.

If he isn't allergic, codeine suppresses coughing. Hope he's feeling better soon and you can get some rest

Might be a stupid question but is he on a proper cough bottle not just honey and lemon.. and one at night that makes him drowsy? My dh had a bad cough continuously for a month recently. Any time l checked he hadn't taken his proper cough medication and was just coughing and coughing endlessly. When l reminded him he took it and it definitely helped especially at night. It has stopped now.

Codeine is a cough suppresent, can be taken in liquid form which your GP could prescribe, or bought over the counter as cocodomol 8/500. Also possible to get higher strength of 30/500 on prescription only. I had a very bad chest infection/cough several years ago like this and ended up with pneumonia and was very poorly. The coughing was hideous. It might be worth him asking to be seen by the GP in case he needs different antibiotics/steroids. I hope he's better asap.

Definitely do NOT give him codeine. Especially with other chest issues. It could suppress his breathing, and he's struggling with his chest already. I'm quite clear this is right.

This.

Absolute no no if you have breathing issues!!

Perhaps he needs an inhaler or even some oxygen if it’s this bad - I would ring 111.

Weirdly a square or two of very dark chocolate (eg 85% cocoa) does help calm coughing a bit - see here: www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20041124/chocolate-ingredient-may-calm-coughs - and it's been reported in lots of other news sources etc too.

It's not a miracle cure, and I know it sounds totally like an urban myth, but it really does work to at least some degree

Wiloswisp · 08/12/2022 23:09

Thank you both, We have codeine from the doctor but he doesn’t like taking it but I might ask him to try it again. He’s also on day and night nurse too. I am a bit concerned about all the things he’s taking but he’s very good with medication and always reads the leaflets so I don’t think he take more than what he should of anything.

I’ll definitely get a medicated cough mixture tomorrow, I’d only got a non medicated one because of everything he’s been taking.

My husband had this recently. None stop coughing. Gradually improved over a few weeks but it was worse than having covid. Have a look at some of the other threads, so many bad coughs/ colds at the moment it's really bad.

Wiloswisp · 08/12/2022 23:12

Definitely another talk to our GP tomorrow. Thank you all, he’s stopped coughing for the moment, I’m going to try and get some sleep too.

Hmmm former nurse, many cardiac patients have cough for different reasons, Ace inhibitors for blood pressure cause cough.. and so does heart failure, means heart can’t squeeze as well, and fluid backs up in lungs.. ..an echocardiogram rules this out ..

largeprintagathachristie · 08/12/2022 23:27

I had this, a bad cough coming towards the end of a bad cold or some kind of virus. I’m sorry to say it took about three weeks to go away completely. I noticed lots of threads on here about coughing, too.

largeprintagathachristie · 08/12/2022 23:27

I felt worse than I did with Covid.
