So I went to A&e because I have a giant abscess on my muffin, it was so bad I was crying and couldn't walk
I had to sit down on the abcess for hours waiting to see someone
Just as I got into the room and he asked me to undress, the thing had popped all over my trousers
He passed me paper towel to dab it
And I lied on the chair , this guy barely even looks at it, doesn't clean it and just says yh OK and writes me for antibiotics,
I asked him do I need antiseptic wipe or something?
And he said no, go home and bathe it?
I said um OK,

Thats it, he didn't give any instructions for cleaning it, didn't give me a dressing (its still bleeding/oozing) and it still feels like there's so much fluid in it
Isn't the doctor meant to drain it fully and disinfect it ??
It almost feel like it popped only partially or filled back up again because its still hurts abit

Not only that but I had to wait for 1hour 30 minutes to get my prescription in the pharmacy, still covered in the puss and blood , I threw the underwear in the bin and was commando under my jeans
Soon as I got home, I showered took the pill
And then before I went to bed I ran a hot bath with some dettol and salt
The absess is still leaking and I don't know what to do!
I'm just holding paper towel on it

Are my expectations too high to expect the doctor to fcking clean the wound? Or at least drain it fully, I feel like once it popped he just said great my job here is done ..
Is there anything I should be doing right now.?
I'm also diabetic so I'm scared its not going to heal properly

oh poor you sounds very uncomfortable. I expect you were seen by an a&e doctor who wouldn’t generally do an incision and drainage and should have referred to the surgeons or perhaps gynae depending on the exact location . It’s probably worth calling the gp when they open for at least a practice nurse review as you might need a referral back if there’s still a collection and depending on the size need packing. That area is a nightmare to apply dressings I would suggest wearing sanitary pads to absorb and regular washes.

AnotherAppleThief · 06/12/2022 04:12

Your muffin?

FlairBand · 06/12/2022 04:21

Poor you that sounds awful. And it sounds pretty poor from the doctor too, st least have a nurse to clean and dress would have given you reassurance

Thats what i expected at least for him to clean it but he couldn't get me out fast enough and I was embarrassed about it popping so I just got out of there wanted to go home at that point

I don't think there is capacity in A&E for that type of treatment. Yes, he wanted to move on to the next patient ASAP. It's crap - blame the government, not the drs and nurses.

Sorry but I really agree with this, am assuming from what I see at work and what posters on here talk about a&e will be jam packed and the cubicle you were in would be in high need for something else. Even today our local radio is reminding people to only attend a&e for high risk situations. There were 8 ambulances parked up outside mine at 8am waiting to off load. No idea how long they will have been outside but at least one will have been there overnight. Its horrible.

Wishiwasatailor · 06/12/2022 10:56

Honestly in a practical sense a disinfectant wipe will do basically nothing. the only way to effectively clean the area is with a shower head and pat dry. Lying on the bed and having it dabbed with some wet gauze or using a syringe to squirt water at the area is minimally effective especially if all the pus hasn’t been removed

Loachworks · 06/12/2022 11:02

I wouldn't have gone to A&E with that. I'd have called my GP or 111 at a stretch but it's not an accident or an emergency.

WednesdayFridayAddams · 06/12/2022 11:05

Tbf once it had popped it’s going to continue to ooze for a bit, him wiping it really isn’t going to do anything, at best you maybe needed a pad but he’d probably be hard push to locate one or thought you already had one. The antibiotics is the important bit and you did get those.
Take them and then if things haven’t improved see the GP but, as you have antibiotics there really isn’t much point in the GP having a look until you’ve completed the course.

PeloFondo · 06/12/2022 11:08

They won't drain it
I get them regularly (I've had hundreds) and they've only ever drained one. It usually has to be done under a GA as they can't numb it properly if infected. Then you're looking at having it packed etc

Usually I do
Warm compresses and painkillers
If it isn't going or looks like it's spreading or it's larger than a golf ball - GP
Antibiotics - usually a couple of courses
Only after that would they then look at draining it but it's a day case unit thing, not a&e so referral
Then you've got to wait for it to heal up
When mine didn't heal up I waited 6 months for plastic surgery on it
This was way before covid so 2015 ish

PeloFondo · 06/12/2022 11:10

And it will drain and hurt, take painkillers and keep it clean and warm baths with salt can help
I wouldn't see the GP if you've already got antibiotics because they can't do anything else

FlamingoSocks · 06/12/2022 11:17

Oh bless you how horrible.
I do think we are going to need to turn our heads around on what we use A and E for. I suppose once it was draining, you just needed antibs. His work (I.e. making sure you are not readmitted with sepsis/were not going to die or be permanently affected) was done. Now it’s back to primary care to make sure the abcess itself is being treated?

IamThegreaterMole · 06/12/2022 12:00

My nails decided to become pink when I was in the hospital, so I couldn't show them the night before they were blue/purple and pale, they keep changing color
My neck veins were visibly pulsating which is not normal for me, but I'm guessing its because my hearts beating so fast
The doctor said my oxygen level was fine and that I'm probably just anxious but I've been anxious all my life and never had these physical symptoms before
Doctor was just really dismissive and poo pooing everything I said

Going to A&E was completely understandable. I don’t care if you call your bits a muffin or any other baked goods, we knew what you meant. And they should have given you some form of instructions on care and what to do. You’re not being unreasonable and that must be miserable, I’m sorry.
