Thrush still lingering

I’ve had thrush for a week now- although better it still hasn’t fully shifted. I’ve used 3 pessaries (200mg per night, three night treatment) and that usually does the trick but this time it hasn’t. Spoke to a pharmacist who advised me to try the oral tablet and external cream on Friday and although a bit better I’m still a bit itchy if I don’t keep applying the external cream. What are my options now? Just want it gone!!

What helped me too before is bio kult candea tablets...
Hope it gets better soon

Hi OP, I’m also having the same issue. I treated myself for thrush last week with the tablets, pessaries and cream and that didn’t do anything. Normally, that would clear it.

So now I’m treating myself for BV as although I don’t have the fishy smelling discharge, I feel I smell different to normal. Thrush symptoms are very similar to BV symptoms so until I can work out which one it is (I ordered a test) then I shall try this treatment. It’s not fully helped yet but it has offered some relief as I’ve only started to treat it today so I’m sitting here in a fair bit of discomfort and feeling a bit irritable. I’m not saying you have BV by the way. Just that I can empathise with your symptoms.

With thrush, I have always found not wearing knickers and letting air circulate around down there is very helpful. No thongs, no tight clothing, reduce sugar intake, take probiotics and eat natural yogurt. Don’t let any fragranced products get down there either.

For me the key is a nornal oral probiotic taken regularly. If I forget and get a flare up a vaginal probiotic inserted last thing at night for a few nights sorts it out far quicker than Canesten etc.

Oh, and advice from a gynaecologist many years ago - only ever wash down below with plain water.

Thank you. What are the tablets and do you still take them?

Thank you. It’s never crossed my mind to look at internal vaginal probiotics. Which ones do you use?

I've always done another pessary if it didn't work
Had recurring thrush for ages and the doctor told me to do a pessary on the 1st of every month whether I had thrush or not, for 6 months

AnnieSnap · 05/12/2022 00:56

Take good quality acidophilus capsules. Thrush can harbour in the gut.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 05/12/2022 01:06

Have you continued to have sex? Your partner could have it and be reinfecting you.

Howdedoodee · 05/12/2022 01:41

There are some strains of candida which are resistant to the typical antifungal treatments. You will need to try (I appreciate that you might be a while waiting) to get an appointment with your GP and tell them that the thrush infection is not responding to clotrimazole (I'm presuming that's what you've tried?). GPs should all be aware of this as they receive updates from the HSA on a weekly basis.

Howdedoodee · 05/12/2022 01:46

Have you had a course of antibiotics recently? I invariably get thrush after every course. 😕
It might be worth speaking to a pharmacist. I'm pretty sure that the new anti-fungal treatments are prescription only, but they may advise on other relief while you're waiting for a GP appointment.

MellowMelly · 05/12/2022 07:51

@Choccyaddict4eva
I have normally used Optibac Intimate Flora for Women but have been using Holland and Barrett’s Live Friendly Bacteria 1 billion for the past 4 months. I also drink Kefir twice a week as recent studies show that the friendly bacteria in Kefir make it past our stomach acid better than some supplements.
It is interesting that @Howdedoodee has mentioned treatment resistant strains as I had wondered whether I had ‘super’ thrush or something 😂

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 05/12/2022 07:52

Dd ended up with BV. Then that went and the antibiotics caused thrush so finally she is free.

MellowMelly · 05/12/2022 08:10

@HeBeaverandSheBeaver That is a vicious circle sadly. I also get thrush after antibiotics. I am glad your daughters cleared up.

Doctor said my reoccurring thrush is being caused by the peri menopause. The joy. I know the peri menopause can also cause reoccurring BV. What a nuisance either way!

Interesting, I didn’t know this about certain strains! Thank you

Not this time, but I always try my hardest to avoid antibiotics as they always cause thrush 😭

@MellowMelly do you feel that the supplements have made a difference? Ha ha sometimes when thrush won’t shift it feels like a mutant strain!!

OP posts:
ghettihead · 05/12/2022 22:04

If you have recurring thrush you should get checked out for diabetes. This was what led to my diagnosis.

MellowMelly · 05/12/2022 22:24

@Choccyaddict4eva I feel the probiotics did make a difference with the severity of it, or at least that was until this mutant strain arrived haha. I’m pleased to say mine is nearly gone today so I think it was BV and not thrush as that is the treatment that worked. I hope you are feeling more comfortable today?

kittykat818 · 06/12/2022 21:17

@PeloFondo How long have you been clear for after the 6 months of treatment?

KSmith94 · 07/12/2022 18:21

Has any one has thrush spread from their lady parts to their bum? I think that’s what happening to me at the minute and I’m not sure what to do, will the treatment for the lady parts also help get rid of it from the bum if that makes sense? I feel so embarrassed 😳

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 07/12/2022 22:00

Can you use the cream for the bottom area and a pessery for the rest.

crazeecatlady · 06/04/2023 12:31

@KSmith94 I've only just read your post. Are you still suffering? If 'it' is spreading possibly it's something called Lichen Schlerosus. Check it out on line. Few doctors (GPs and others know about it, they say it's rare but it really isn't) It's an auto immune condition and has the same symptoms as thrush, so do check it out. PM me if you need extra info

KSmith94 · 06/04/2023 12:56

@crazeecatlady thankfully no, I did for a bit but I bought a second treatment over the counter and that did the trick luckily

I really feel for you of you're suffering a lot with it though because I remember how utterly uncomfortable it was
