Crohnic constipation - how do you manage?

Due to Fibroids I am constantly constipated 🥺 How do you manage it. I feel bad relying on Laxido but it seems to the only thing that helps a bit. I eat really healthily too.

Have you tried a magnesium supplement OP? Can be a game changer and lots of people say we need a mag supplement anyway, it's a common deficiency.

Redandpinkstripes · 03/12/2022 19:40

Thank you, will have a look. Is it any particular type?

DP has crohns and swears by beer and chilli

He also doesn't eat sugar, which helps with inflammation which might help

@Redandpinkstripes I used to take bog standard Holland and Barrett mag but now I get it in bigger quantities from Amazon. I take it for other things but it is also standard for constipation and it certainly eliminates any tendency towards constipation for me even though that's not why I take it, IYSWIM. Links for both. Good luck!

Chronic lazy bowel here. I take magnesium as a general supplement and it doesn’t seem to help. Exercise helps me, I have recently been having ground linseed daily, that helps a bit.
My main coping mechanism seems to be ignoring it and going when it happens naturally. I hardly ever use laxatives as I don’t want to rely on them, but never travel without some as being away from home makes things worse

merlotlover · 04/12/2022 08:44

I tried lots of medical stuff but the best thing for me is branflakes and some flaxseed on top x

Garysmum · 04/12/2022 08:46

I am a way further down the line than the pps. I am stuck on laxatives every day - a lot of senna. I have actually been able to cut this down. For months I was on piccolax daily - the stuff they give you as a bowel clean out pre surgery.
I know if mine gets worse they will shorten my bowel but the risk of that surgery is that I end up with a stoma.
The only thing that has helped me is that I was put on a new anti-inflammatory recently for an autoimmune condition (nothing to do with my bowel) and suddenly there has been a dramatic improvement after 17 years.
I suspect I have a bowel condition which has not been diagnosed.

There is hope, OP. I was on Laxido for about 2 or 3 years. All of a sudden, I no longer needed it. Don't know why.

cezannesapple · 04/12/2022 23:24

Laxido, lots of roughage and a handful of chia seeds on my breakfast. I have something called a tortuous colon which means it is often a problem and this helps. Probiotics are supposed to help too so I add those into my diet.

vipersnest1 · 04/12/2022 23:40

Laxido was no help to me. I'm now taking bisacodyl daily and it seems to help a bit.
Nothing will ever solve the problem as I have pelvic floor dysfunction and a rectocele, which I hope will be sorted out in time, so I am somewhere near to normal.
When I last saw my colorectal consultant, he happily told me some people use laxatives and some use suppositories.
I didn't know that and have always steered clear of taking anything permanently as I thought it made the gut lazy, but that seemed to be his advice. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I suppose you will need to experiment and see what works best for you.

Redandpinkstripes · 07/12/2022 21:12

Thank you for your suggestions. I will persevere with Laxido. I hate using it the night before work as really hate going to the toilet at work.
I have Kefir, fruit and chia seeds for breakfast and try to eat fruit/veg a lot as I'm veggie. I drink lots of lemon water as well. I will also look at a Magnesium supplements too

Same problem here.
Using a combination of a pint of water in bed on waking taken in big gulps for peristaltic movement
Yoga downward dog helps - though socially difficult!
And eating foods that personally disagree with my bowel and gut - in my case beetroot, pears, frozen plums, frozen raspberries.
The above usually gets a movement going straight after teeth cleaning
…..but one sandwich while on the road and I’m done for for days

Take a look on the ERIC website. It’s designed for parents of children with constipation but it’s the same things which work.

Redandpinkstripes · 10/12/2022 23:15

Thanks for all of your helpful suggestions. Sad to see so many others are having problems too. It is so uncomfortable :(

I’m prescribed Resolor (Prucalopride) but there are still times it’s a struggle, especially if I haven’t had a homemade fruit & veg smoothie. I have to have one every day or I’m in trouble!
