Can ventolin make your voice hoarse?

KatyMac · 02/12/2022 21:36

I've been coughing since Easter

Tried omeprazole
Had a chest xray & blood tests
X2 antibiotics

GP suggest ventolin which has helped a lot but my voice has gone a bit funny; is this normal? Can I fix it?

How much Ventolin are you taking?

KatyMac · 02/12/2022 21:41

1 puff between 3 & 5 times a day - I am supposed ro take x2 4 times a day but I started slowly

It's def reduced the severity of the coughing if not the frequency

How long have they said to take it 4x a day? That's quite a lot.

I guess it's for your cough though, not asthma.

It can cause throat irritation, so this could well explain your voice hoarseness.

Well I am 8 days in - I thought it was a lot so I only did 1 puff

In a month the GP wants to talk to be again and if it helps do some breathing tests

I am sleeping better but I am more phlegm-y

Ask for a spacer. I've found this helps with the throat irritation

I think it can. I'm a life long asthmatic and even though I don't take ventolin very much these days my voice has been hoarse for years.

Is it just a short term treatment for you? Generally they prefer you to be on a preventer rather than taking daily ventolin.

I think they're trying to work out what it is

I mean a cough since Easter is odd- but then no-one has seen me or heard the cough so they are in the dark a bit I guess

At least the chest xray suggests it's nothing sinister

They were convinced initially it was reflux

I am using a spacer - my grandad, dad, husband & daughter all have/had asthma so inhalers/spacers/rinsing etc are all normal for me (ro remind other people to do, but still...)

Afterc4 weeks I might get some breathing tests

I was advised to take a sip of water after each puff, to avoid getting a sore throat.

I get this with a different inhaler, gargling and spitting helps a lot. I got lazy recently and then had a very long afternoon at a Christmas lunch trying to make myself heard so I'm back to it now.

My throat was already a bit ropey but I've been rinsing everytime

A friend mentioned it but wasn't sure when it started
