Broken thumb?

DuvetQueen1 · 01/12/2022 22:25

I've fallen awkwardly today and hurt my thumb. Really painful - I actually teared up!

I've done all the things I'm supposed to, ice, raised up etc

The bruising is now starting to come out pretty purple/black. And the whole pad of the thumb and the thumb itself is very swollen. The nail had also gone grey/purple

Am I right in thinking there's no point seeing anyone about it? Even if it is broken, they can't strap it or anything?

Anyone got any similar experiences?

When I broke my thimb a few years ago, they put it in a plastic splint for a couple of weeks. Probably worth getting it checked out. Hope it heals soon

DuvetQueen1 · 01/12/2022 22:50

Thanks @Dartsplayer - I was thinking it was like a toe where they can't do anything.

Really don't fancy a hospital trip with a possibly sprained, possibly broken thumb - I imagine that would be a very long wait!

I'm guessing for a splint though, they'd need to Xray?

You can buy some sized splints at the chemist.
Hope it eases for you soon

A walk in centre would xray and sort out broken digits, however local ones here close at 11.
Can access them by calling 111 for an appointment.

SaorsaSolasta · 01/12/2022 22:57

Is there a minor injuries unit nearby? I've never had to wait more than 2 hours at mine and they can x-ray

Justalittlebitfurther · 01/12/2022 22:57

I went with a toe three weeks later and they told me off. It was broken and they would have given me a boot. You should go and get it checked.

Robinonaspade · 01/12/2022 22:58

Sorry, realised they are now called Minor Injury Units.

DuvetQueen1 · 01/12/2022 22:58

Thanks - perhaps not the reassuring you're right nothing they can do answers i was hoping for 😅
Chemist is a good idea though - not too sure whether our walk in has an x Ray machine but I'll try and do some digging

Googling minor injuries now!

Yeah @Justalittlebitfurther this is it. I dont want to make it worse but don't want to waste anyone's time either 😕

Hope your toe is recovered now!

I did this last year and ended up going to A&E (feeling a bit silly) but they took it seriously and x-rayed it, and gave me a sort of splint to protect it, and a follow up physio appointment.

I had stubbed it badly and it swelled up so I couldn’t bend it. The pad was really tender. The x-ray in my case showed an avulsion fracture where small fragments of bone have broken away.

Mischance · 01/12/2022 23:15

I think you should get it examined/x-rayed. Hands are precious and losing dexterity could become a real problem; also you could develop arthritis in the joint later. I would not ignore it if I were You.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 01/12/2022 23:24

111 should be able to tell you where your nearest minor injuries unit is and might even give you a booking slot. I agree with pp - thumbs are important, worth getting fixed properly

DuvetQueen1 · 02/12/2022 09:27

It's not as purple as I was expecting it to be this morning. The pain did wake me up through the night though and the swelling is there.

Just spoke to my local minor injuries whose xray machine is broken - 111 it is I guess!

So, managed to get an x Ray but results will apparently take a week!

I'm working on the basis that the radiologist would have told me if it was broken though?

Anyone had any experience?
