I think maybe I had ovarian torsion

Two years ago I had a niggling pain in my left side roughly where my ovary is. It started like my usual ovulation pains and got worse throughout the day. I thought at first maybe I was a bit constipated so took lactulose and drank a ton of water. The pain got even worse in the evening even though I’d had bowel movements at that point. Then it went up to an excruciating pain, I’ve had two children and I’d say it was on par with labour. I was bent over the sofa swaying, moaning, couldn’t really talk. My partner wanted to call an ambulance. I held off for a bit and got into bed, I was literally in a ball or squirming with pain. The pain started to ease after about 2h at that peak level. I managed to sleep after a few more hours and in the morning I woke up to a bruised feeling and achey side. It hurt to sit and it also hurt to walk. I called OOH gp (Saturday) and she assessed me in person and said it could be appendicitis and I should head to the main hospital so they can see me. I was admitted and my bloods taken, they said I had high white blood cell count so also suspected appendicitis even though I explained the pain was mostly gone. I stayed in hospital overnight and they monitored me. In the morning I was scanned (ct scan) and told nothing could be seen to be causing any pain in that area and perhaps it was ovulation pain (it definitely wasn’t) and by this time my bloods were back to normal so I was discharged.
I still think about it all the time because it was such a scary intense pain. Everything I have read since has pointed to ovarian torsion. I assume it must have righted itself after about 2h and that’s why the pain went away and nothing could be seen. Just wondered if anyone had experienced similar?

Sounds like it could be.

I recently had ovarian torsion. (in October)

Mine was caused by tumors that had only recently been discovered 3 weeks before (at the point when they blocked my bowel and I was in hospital for that)

The pain was unbearable. It made me vomit. Worse than labour. Went from 0 - 10+ in <5mins. I could barely move and was bent over at an angle but couldnt be straight or bend further. Pain took my breath away. And I went to A&E after about 15mins

I went to A&E and was re-admitted, and at this point they decided to make the tumor removal surgary even more urgent, so I had my operartion 20 days later.

Twisted ovary (and blocked bowel) pain are un belieavably extreme and I dont think one could appreciate quite how painful it is without having experianced it.

I dont think ovaries just twist though? (Or do they?) Mine were being pulled / moved by the tumors growing inside me.

Thanks for sharing your experience @nannyl I'm not sure to be honest. In my case I had just ovulated and they said they could see the corpus luteum cyst and it's my thinking possibly that could of caused it. I'm not sure.

That does sound similar to the type of pain I had. I had one episode as a teenager, where I was staying with family friends and didn't feel brave enough to explain the pain I was in. I endured at that time until it eased after about 36 hours. It reoccurred when I was at university (i couldn't stand and was blacking out from pain) and this time I was an emergency admission, the twisted tube was swollen to the size of an orange and at the point of bursting when they removed it. I spent a week in hospital (and missed my exams). They told me that there were signs of existing scarring, which was when I realised that it must have been the cause of my previous agony.

Just to clarify it was a twisted fallopian tube, which was removed, they left the ovary intact. I later went on to conceive twice so it wasn't a barrier to pregnancy in case that is a worry.

Thank you for sharing @Saisong perhaps it could have been my Fallopian tube. Since it happened I’ve had another baby. Now when I ovulate on that side it is always very painful and another weird tmi thing, when I need to go for a poop badly it also hurts my left side.
