How long is DD going to be sick/off her food? I have images of her wasting away..........

Ok - melodramatic - but it makes us so sad to see her so upset and fed up.
She's one, had acute vom Sat/Sun, then periods between vom lengthening, and she had a good day yesterday, but today it's back and she will hardly eat a thing.
PFB and her first tummy bug, so are a bit clueless - any advice/shared experience would be welcome (yes, we have seen GP and may go back tomorrow....)

Also - does she need rehydration fluid if she's getting breastmilk/water? Or is that just for when she can't keep anything down?

Hi mylovelymonster, sorry to hear your dd is poorly. Mine is 14 months and just had a nasty flu bug, didn't eat for a week with no problems at all. Fluids are the most important thing - little sips if she's struggling to keep anything down and build it up very gradually. I wouldn't even bother with solid food for at least 12 hours after she last threw up, unless she really seems to want it. They seem to "know" what is good for them and refuse solids for a reason iyswim.

I don't know about rehydration fluid but wouldn't have thought it necessary unless she shows signs of being dehydrated: dry mouth, sunken eyes, dark wee...

I'm sure someone with more experience than me will be along shortly! Hope she's better soon

Also you might find she makes up for it once she's well again, eating like a horse and even waking for extra feeds in the night!

my ds had the norovirus thing (i reckon) starting on his first birthday (gave it to everyone who came to party ) and literally for a whole week he only ate about 2 weetabix in total - i too was desperately worried as he is not a huge baby but he just seemed to know that he didn't want anything and no amount of presenting him with his fave foods would shift him. But after a week he bounced back and was fine and really hungry..
i should have learnt from him that when he REALLY doesn't want to eat he is telling me he has a sickness bug - last week one day he refused to eat and i was perplexed - then he started throwing up!
agree with scoobi6 - they seem to "know" when their bodies are ready for something..
just try and keep up the fluids.
But do take her to the doc - they won't be annoyed with you! all the best

ps not sure about rehydration fluids, as the doc??

Loads of us round here have had the puking bug. Us adults have had it for a few days, but many of the babies had it for a good week, poor mites. It seems to be the way... Get in touch with your GP for advice re the rehydration salts.. I don't know what the advice is for los, but if she is still taking breastmilk and water, I doubt she's dehydrated. My ds is 18 mths and I know what you mean about the first time they are poorly - they are so pitiful!

I do hope so, lovely monster. I read somewhere that their second winter is quite tough as they have lost much of their immunity they acquired from Mum, but haven,t yet developed their own. Also they are socialising more. I console myself with this. However, I dread nursery in 2 years time...

mylovelymonster · 31/01/2008 19:49

Ah.....DD started nursery in Nov........it's been an interesting winter.........
