Teeth and Alendronic Acid

I've been on Alendronic Acid for osteoporosis for about 9 months now. Stupidly have only recently found out it can cause problems with your teeth. I have terrible teeth - only about 18 left and a bunch of crowns at the front. Now I'm worrying that everything is going to loosen and/or fall out. Can someone explain to me why there is an issue with teeth and this drug (it's a once a week tablet) and if there are alternatives? And who should I contact - the dentist or the doctor?

Speak to your dentist, it doesn’t actually loosen anything or add to rot/broken teeth but we do have to be more cautious if anything needs extracting as it increases risk of bone necrosis following extraction but in reality as so many people take it we just review the socket afterwards at a set time period to check on healing. If someone is on infusions it might be more appropriate in secondary care ie referral to hospital. Hope this helps.

I went to see my dentist before I started taking it. There is only a risk with extractions and even then it doesn't affect everyone. My teeth are rubbish but my dentist reassured me that he would do everything possible to avoid extractions and advised me to see the hygenist every six months.

Thanks. The warnings make it sound like your teeth are going to loosen up in your gums. I can afford to lose any more.
