Bleeding between periods - cervical polpy and ectropion.

I’m 45, regular periods and not on any birth control. Definitely not pregnant.

For my last 2 cycles I’ve been having spotting between, which is very unusual for me. I’m on day 13 of my cycle and for the last 3 days I’ve had brownish and pinkish spotting. Also period type cramping but no other symptoms.

Went to GP today. She examined me and gave me a smear as it was due next month (3 years since last). She said my cervix was quite long which no one had told
me before, and I had an ectropion and a polyp. She removed the polyp, or what she could see to remove. The polyp is being sent away. Due to the NHS waiting times, it’s currently 12 weeks for the smear and about 6 weeks for the polyp biopsy.

I’m really quite anxious about all (cancer fear) this and wondering if anyone else has had similar and been ok? I’ve had abnormal smears in the past but not for a long time and have never needed treatment. As usual I’ve jumped to the worst case scenario and am not sure I can manage to cope with a 12 week wait.

Obviously the title should have read ‘polyp’ 🙄

I had a polyp found this time last year, removed in May by gynae consultant, all came back clear. I think they test them as a matter of course, but it's usually just one of those things rather than a big issue, is the impression I got.

I don't know what an ectropion is.

I've got an ectropion, it's just cells growing on the outside of the cervix. Comes in handy for peri when you can no longer pinpoint periods because it causes spotting a couple of days before the witch is due. It's not usually anything to worry about.

Thanks for your replies, very reassuring, far more so than Dr Google which I should know better than to consult. Hopefully it’s just one of those things and nothing to worry about. A 12 week wait does seem ridiculous for a smear result- apparently it’s ‘due to covid’ - like everything else.
