Hello,

I am just a bit concerned about my husband who has symptoms including a fever, switching between shivering and shaking and burning up, muscle aches, loss of appetite. I assume this is the flu (covid test was negative). He has no underlying health conditions and is 36. He's asleep now I'm just worried do I need to contact 111 or the GP tomorrow or will he just get better in a few days?

He did have the flu jab however in September (frontline social worker)

I would just keep a watchful eye on him, it all sounds very normal for someone with a temperature. You can still get flu even if vaccinated as there are often several flu viruses doing the rounds at any one time and the vaccine only protects against certain strains.

Sorry but why are you worried?!

@Pootle40 because of the fever

Ok diagnosis: Man Flu.
You need to do the following:

  1. He should immediately get changed into a Dressing Gown Of Doom. It might smell a bit. The smell wards off the flu particles.
  2. He should lie in bed playing on his phone. If you have a games console it could save his life.
  3. He can’t possibly be expected to do washing up, childcare or working, even from home, in this delicate state.
  4. Modern medicine will not understand the severity and complexity of the man flu. Thankfully you can provide a therapeutic dose of hot tea and lemsip. It’s basically life support at this point.
It should clear up in 3 days unless he milks it.

Fever is normal, it is the body's way of killing whatever bug it is that is making us unwell.

ecnatsid · 28/11/2022 20:42

Plenty of fluids, regular paracetamol and just keep an eye on him.

mynameischloe · 28/11/2022 20:43

He'll be fine I'm sure. DH had similar yesterday and he was roasting over night. Woke up okay this morning, it was all very odd.

ItsTheSmallThings · 28/11/2022 20:43

Have you taken his temperature?

Is he confused?

Has he taken paracetamol?

Hahaha this is all the advice you need

offyoufuckcuntychops · 28/11/2022 20:45

Given that he has no other conditions which might cause concern, I'm struggling to understand why you would be worried, @User19886. Have you never known anyone who's had a temperature before?

Ohreallyisit · 28/11/2022 20:49

Has he had a covid jab recently? I had this when I had my booster recently.

Namenic · 28/11/2022 20:50

if it is flu, he will feel unwell (but be able to respond and talk to you and get up to use the toilet).
He should keep hydrated.
He can take some paracetamol (according to the instructions on the back of the packet) for his fever and aches. Most of the time it improves in a few days.

If he is finding it hard to breathe or has delirium (confusion) or finds it hard to get up to use the toilet or you are concerned, seek medical attention and advice urgently (could be 111, GP, A&e - Depends on how I’ll he is).
It is not common, but he may get a bacterial pneumonia (needs antibiotics) on top of the flu or need hospital treatment for flu.

HyggeandTea · 28/11/2022 20:51

Horrid when people aren't well, isn't it.

Regular paracetamol (within guidelines), plenty of warm drinks and rest.

He'll be fine x

SmartWatch · 28/11/2022 20:51

My 2 teenage sons have this at the moment and both went automatically to dressing gown and pants mode! It was uncanny. It must be a gene. Plenty of fluids like fruit juice help along with lemsip, but they will only take the tablets as lemsip drinks aren't cool. Throat lozenges. Hot water bottle helps with the chills.

PeloFondo · 28/11/2022 20:53

I wouldn't worry. Was at the doctors last week as I had a UTI and turned out I had a fever and hadn't even noticed it Blush
It's pretty normal if you've got a virus or flu or an infection

Pootle40 · 28/11/2022 20:55

User19886 · 28/11/2022 20:35

@Pootle40 because of the fever

Ok but you know that's pretty normal when our body is fighting infection. Do you have health anxieties?

ichundich · 28/11/2022 20:59

I think you know your husband best, so if you're worried, ring 111 and speak to someone medically qualified. Hope your DH gets better!

Justwingingitox · 28/11/2022 21:00

I've just got over this. Exactly the same symptoms. Feel grotty a week on. A lot of other people have been experiencing this too.

This is golden. So on point.
