Swollen lymph node? Advice needed please...

I noticed last night that there is a lump in my groin on the left hand side, (where the elastic of your knickers sit), it is about 1cm across, hard and well beneath the surface of the skin. It is slightly painful to touch. Does this sound like a swollen lymph node and what should I do?

I am FULL of a cold right now, could that be causing it.

Should I be worried? My Mum developed cancer when she was only 2 years older than me. I'm 32. Trying not to panic!!

My dp had swollen glands in the same area and I do remember him going to the doctors but they didnt seem to be to concerned at the time. I think like many glands they can pop up when you are ill so I would not panic to much about it Hopeysgirlwasntbig.

I dont want to be UNreassuring but personally I would get that checked out, just to be sure!

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 31/01/2008 09:37

should I get it checked straight away or see if it goes when my cold clears up?

Oh poor you. Well, I think work on getting yourself better and I am sure it will go as quickly as it came. You could always phone your doc for a reasuring chat if you keep worrying. Im sure they too would put your mind at rest. No wonder you are so anxious. Take things easy x

HereComeTheGirls · 31/01/2008 09:40

Well, I personally would get it checked now. But it depends how much you would worry about it, if you are happy to just wait then that's fine!

chloesmumtoo · 31/01/2008 09:40

Sorry cross posted then.

I had this in an armpit once and also had a tiny DD to worry about so I know just how you feel.

Have you anything on that side which might be a small infection - an insect bite or a spot you hadn't noticed? That's what mine turned out to be.

Even if not, the most likely cause is some non-specific infection like your cold: my DD recently had a gland come up under her chin, hard and pebble-like, which briefly terrified the life out of me but which did go away. I wouldn't worry just yet but if it doesn't go away in a few days I'd go to the doc, just to hear him say (like they do) 'nothing to worry about - happens all the time - lot of strange things going about'.

HereComeTheGirls · 31/01/2008 09:43

I'm just not sure a cold would cause a swollen gland in your GROIN. A swollen gland there would be due to an infection or something down there. Anyway, definitely not trying to worry you!

missorinoco · 31/01/2008 09:43

is it the only lump? if so, unlikely to cold is causing it. (but if painful, it is likely to be infection rather than anything else, usually from legs or feet.)

you are worried, and it will nag at the back of your mind, so i would get it checked out.

Bobbiewickham · 31/01/2008 09:46

I get one there if I am run down or have a cold. All your lymph nodes jump into action to fight infection. Sounds like it's doing its job to me I'm sure it will go away.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 31/01/2008 09:46

I may give my doc a ring, he's lovely.

I've just spoken to my GP and he said it's very likely that the two are connected. He said when you have a cold virus on board the lymph nodes anywhere in the body can swell up. He's told me that it can take a few weeks for it to go down, but if it doesn't or if I notice any more coming up, I'm to go and see him.
