after 6 weeks of getting worse IBS, i finally went to my Dr and conceeded defeat. I am fed up, not sleeping and starting to be fussy with my food as i don't know how I am going to feel after each meal. My dr has prescribed me 10mg of amitriptyline to be taken each night. has anyone has this and what side effects did you get? I'm not keen to be taking an antidepressant even though she explained that my dose is tiny compared to the dose given to help depression. i have been on anti depressants before (seroxat)which worked but am hoping to TTC later this year and don't want medication to get in the way.
TIA

I did a long time ago. For me it was very effective in slowing my digestive system down and eventually returning it to normal. It did make me quite tired at first but I was on quite a big dose (70mg?) I took it quite early at night so I didnt feel 'hung over' in the am.
Hope it works for you.

Not for IBS but for pain-induced insomnia. I have no problem only using it when I need (so no noticeable addiction/withdrawal issues) and it does work for me from that point of view. I have no side effects from it whatsoever. Obviously I can't give you a review from the IBS point of view. Hope you feel better soon.

I take 20mg of it at night. I don't take it as an AD, but to help me sleep. I suffer from Fibromyalgia, and one of the side effects/symptoms of this is insommnia, and because Fibro sufferers can also get chronic fatigue, it helps keep my sleeplessness to a minimum. You may find you will be tired for a day or 2, but regular use should see an improvment in your sleeping and that may make it easier for you to deal with the IBS. Haven't tried it from the IBS point of view, but give it a go for the sleeping

thanks to all of you. part of my probelm is that i don't know if it's the lack of sleep that's contributing to my IBs or the other way round. i have been periodically taking zlopidem to get a reasonable night's sleep but my dr won't prescribe any more- she is hoping this will be the answer to both problems, and will maybe increase the dose in a week or two i think. she did mention the 'hangover effect' - with my dh away this weekend, i might have to wait till till sunday to start them, just in case i can't manage dd on my own! i may suffer at work though, but i suppose, no more than at the moment; i just can't concentrate, i'm so tired! Scarily enough, the children haven't notice thanks again for your help.
