Sore ear

A few weeks ago I had an itchy almost tickle feeling in my left ear that sometimes gives a wet sensation. I didn't really pay much attention but yesterday the same ear became sore. Last night in bed I couldn't sleep on it but I took some paracetamol and got in with the day but it's still very sore now behind and at the side of my ear where entrance to ear is. It feels hot and I'm not sure if it's just a typical normal sore ear. I did have a acoustic neuroma on the same ear 20yeats ago if that's important to mention.

Anyone any advice?

Could it be a coldsore?

KangarooKenny · 19/11/2022 08:30

Sounds very much like an ear infection.

Thanks for replying. Wil an ear infection shift in its own or will I need an antibiotic?

It’s spreading as it’s now sore on the outside too. And I’d be concerned about a possible burst ear drum due to the wet feeling you described.

The wet feeling seems to have stopped when the pain started, if that's important? Ah I hate when it's weekend and doc aren't as easily accessible 😩

Op,i can understand, given your history, you are concerned. So, if you are genuinely worried try to speak with your GP or call 111 now . It could be” just” a standard ear infection. . Sadly ears are buggers cos it takes specialist equipment and training to actually see what’s going on in there- otoscope and none of us on here can second guess that.

if you do assume at this stage it’s an ear infection- don’t underestimate it. I used to be plagued with ear infections. Ear infections are one of the most painful things to get ( imho worse than childbirth and on a par with kidney stones)

yes, it might clear on its own. Even if you can get a GP appointment they won’t treat with antibiotics until their sure there’s a bacterial infection. Most ear infections are viral and there are no meds in the world right now, to treat those. antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. So you are going to need to wait at least 3 -5 days till a GP may confirm they can prescribe antibiotics anyway.

in meantime go to pharmacy and get strong painkillers- codeine based if needs. You can also ask pharmacist for advice - they have 4/5 years medical training and are very knowledgeable- they have a private room you can ask for a consult in.

other things: . Try to avoid lying on your side and at night it may help to raise your head slightly higher than normal- it will be worse at night lying down, due to the ears physiology. Some people ( inc nhs) swear by placing warm or cold flannel on ear- make sure it’s dry though. Keep the ear dry - try to avoid washing your hair for instance. Do not poke it, don’t put anything into it . If you’re a user of ear buds - throw them in the bin and never ever use them again. 😱

personally, if pain intensifies I’d self certify sick- couldn’t think when pain got intense

seek immediate help if you start to get discharge, high temperature, feeling sick or a sudden loss of hearing (as ear swells with infection you get hearing loss- but this is sudden on set due to potential ear drum burst).

@Newlifestartingatlast aren't you fabulous! Thanks so much for that comprehensive response. I'm taking strong liquid capsul neurophen atm which are great when they kick in. I have a job interview on Monday ( talk about bad timing ) so I'll keep an eye on it until then.

I don't think in my adult life I've ever had a sore ear/ infection so nothing to gauge it on but I'll keep an eye on it .

You're all fab thank you xx

Sadly I didn’t till I hit 40s, and then came on thick and fast. I think as I went peri menopause I got eczema recurring from childhood, and one place was inside my ear.🥴 the doctors were fond of calling it “a bit manky”🤢🤣
at one point I was getting them monthly and begging for mercy . Eventually went private and had my ears micro syringed for the first time . Bloody hell, went 9 months without a single infection . Then Came back, micro syringed again by private ear specialist and touch wood I’ve been clear now for 14 months.

I do not know why it took 6 years without NHS offering microsyringing …when it was the first thing the specialist did once he’d had a gander . Bloody hell it hurt while he was doing it , and I don’t want to look at what came out 😱, but it really stopped the recurring infections. I will keep going back private if it reoccurs
