Build up of dry skin on base of the head (photo)

Hi, looking for advice. My dd 11 has a really thick dry patch at the back of her head just above the neck.
It's so thick! Looks very red underneath and sore. She says it's not sore or itchy.
It's much thicker than regular dandruff.
I had treated it with cradle cap shampoo and it definitely helped but just one week later it's built back up again.
Any ideas on what is causing it and how best to treat it?
Thanks

Does she wash her own hair? Is she rinsing this area properly?

Lennybenny · 16/11/2022 18:20

Google seborrheic dermatitis. We tried t gel, head and shoulders, oil etc. Nothing worked until we used Nizoral. There are 2 types, original and daily. You use one every 3/4 days and the daily one in-between. It's taken a few weeks of washing every 2 days but now we're down to every 3/4 days.

I wish we'd found it earlier.

I agree with @Lennybenny in that it could be sebborheic dermatitis.
I've suffered from this a couple of times over the years, usually after something stressful happening in life. My scalp looked like your DD's, but it was also itchy.
My GP prescribed "Betacap", a liquid that you squirt gently onto the affected area. Instant relief, and condition cleared after a few days' use.
Don't think you an buy it OTC, but on prescription, or online pharmacies.

Yes she does, I will double check with her again and make sure she is rinsing. She would definitely be prone to oily skin. We have also had to ensure she was washing her face properly as she was getting quite a few spots. Maybe it's got worse with hormones?

Thanks I will definitely try this. Does the pharmacy sell it?

I'd use Nizoral and wash her hair for her for the next few weeks or so

Go to the GP. I suffered in silence for years with psoriasis because I assumed it was just how things were.

I have looked up the sebborheic dermatitis it's looks and sounds like it could be this. If it doesn't clear up I will bring her to the gp to get a prescription.

I would check with your G.P. lt looks like it could be scalp psoriasis.

@Happymama24 yes, Boots will have it. I got mine on Amazon first then I think Morrisons or Boots. They do a 60ml about £6.99/£6.50ish and 100ml but I couldn't get the 100ml in town only online. The daily Nizoral I got off Amazon. Ds hair is much happier, less dry, curlier and generally just in a better condition. It also stopped this white line that he had along his forehead under his hair line. I'm actually gutted that I didn't try it earlier while he was still in school.
