DS2, 13 months, got REALLY bad nappy rash, bleeding, sores, the lot, what can I do to make it better for him?

It has been going on for about a week, been putting that Kamillosan on, it didn't seem to be getting any worse, but not much better either. I've left his nappy off as much as possible. Washed him at every change with just plain water and cotton wool, putting talc on to make sure it is properly dry. But now it is bleeding and obviously very uncomfortable for him normally, but he is in absolute agony with it when I am washing him.

Neither of them have ever had a problem with nappy rash and normally the Kamillosan get's rid of anything that starts, but this not shifting.

Will the doctor be able to give him anything?

Get an egg, separate the white and the yolk and gently with your fingers put the white on his sore bits. Allow to dry for a few mins and then either let him go bare bum or put a nappy on him. Leave on til next time he needs changed then wash off. Repeat a few times if necessary.

You might think this a bit daft but honestly it really does work.

I second the egg white thing. It provides a barrier between wee/poo and the skin. Also recommend making a load of cammomile tea and storing it in a bottle with a lid. Use this on cotton wool/flannel etc when changing rather than wipes. It will clean and soothe. Also as much bare bum time as poss. Hope he is better soon.

Are you sure it's nappy rash and not thrush?

If there are raised sort of blisters, then it is likely to be thrush and some canestan will sort it out almost immediately. Be sure to tell the pharmacist that it is for a baby though as it comes in different strengths.

Vaseline. Creates a barrier between wee and bum so it doesnt sting. I remember once my dd had bad nappy rash, I lay her on a mat on the floor with a bare bum and opened the window. Next day it was soooooo much better, she had to go all day with no nappy wiping the floor was easy compared with listening to her crying.

Had a similar thing with my son. He had a reaction to Penicillin after a strangulated hernia operation. Came out in a horrendous rash all over his body and especially bad in nappy area, weeping sores, it was awful. Was recommended to ask for Zinc ointment at the chemist.. not zinc and castor oil just zinc ointment. I used to plaster it on at every nappy change and it worked wonders.. I carried on using it even when he was better, and never had any problems again. Might be worth a try

Thanks everyone, he is asleep for now, so will try the egg when he wakes up.

I just feel so sorry for him He had gone all week with it, not bothering him too much but now it is open and sore, he was crying his little heart out

He has a cold, last time he had a cold he had a bit of a red bum, but nothing like this, I guess it is linked to the virus?

Anyway thanks again Fingers crossed it will work for him - and me!!

Sorry Squonk meant to say, around the very edges of the red area there are a few small spots, wouldn't call them blisters as such, but I will keep an eye on them obviously, incase it turns out to be thrush.

tis worth putting some canestan on anyway, NatalieJane - it won't do any harm if it is NOT thrush and will help so much if it is...

mistlethrush · 30/01/2008 13:49

Second the barrier option - if egg white doesn't help, try using Zinc and Castor Oil cream on top of whatever you're using as a barrier - did this with ds on occasions and it all cleared up quickly

Hope it gets better soon

Sounds like thrush or a fungal infection. gp can prescribe a stronger cream if Metanium etc does n't sort it

NatalieJane · 30/01/2008 13:51

Will get DH to pick some canestan up for him on his way home then, LOL I should think he'll like doing that!!!

Thanks Mistlethrush, how do I get to be a mum of 2 and not know about egg white???

How is his sore bum now?

NatalieJane · 01/02/2008 13:50

I did the egg white, it didn't make any difference at all, so I got DH to pick up some Metanium(sp?), it stopped the bleeding/weeping by the time he went to bed Wednesday night, and the redness is taking it's time going down but it is going. So it is getting there.

Thanks for asking
