50!years old - lost 1.5 stone without trying

That’s just it! I’ve had tests for lots of stuff - all came back normal. But I’ve gone from 11.5 stone to 10 stone in a year without trying. Why could this happen?!?

Bump

I don’t think you’ll find the answer here when lots of tests haven’t! Low mood? Stress?

Apollonia1 · 12/11/2022 08:49

Have you gone off certain foods?
Eg when I was pregnant, I went off pizza and crisps and lost loads of weight.

If you've gone off certain fattening foods, over a year you'd lose a lot of weight without trying.

A similar thing happened to me.
I think the thing is when you're not actually 'trying' to lose weight is probably when you reach a natural healthy balance with your calorie intake.
If all tests are normal then maybe you're regularly taking in slightly less than you need resulting in your weight loss?
If you keep losing & don't want to then it's worth tracking for a few weeks there's loads of apps available.

Are you drinking less, walking more

Squashpocket · 12/11/2022 09:27

Acid reflux did this to me. Killed my appetite dead

Bytheseaoneday · 12/11/2022 11:46

@LittleBearPad no changes at all

Any lifestyle changes, any changes in medication?

Bytheseaoneday · 12/11/2022 14:03

@CryCeratops no, nothing at all!

I was also going to say acid reflux. Do you have any respiratory symptoms (clearing throat, cough after drinking/eating/sinus pain) as it could be ‘silent’ reflux.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 12/11/2022 15:37

Assuming no underlying health conditions then your energy expenditure has exceeded your intake. So you’ve either unconsciously been eating fewer calories and/or expending more energy. Small differences in these over a year will make a difference.

If someone normally eats one digestive biscuit a day everyday, then stops, over the course of year they would lose half a stone. Staggering really. Equally just walking in everyday life a little bit more everyday can make a difference.

Also, at 50 you may be experiencing hormonal fluctuations that have affected your appetite.

Bytheseaoneday · 12/11/2022 19:02

@JustDanceAddict no no symptoms at all!

You should see your gp. Unexplained significant weight loss can be a cancer symptom. That's not to say it is that as there are many other potential causes, but it's worth getting checked out.

And you should read the OP. The first line says she has had tests.

The boob fairy came back for some of what she had given me, a couple of years post menopause, but that was a loss of under half a stone, which stabilised.

Bytheseaoneday · 12/11/2022 22:17

@Pirrin thsnks. That is my underlying worry. However the loss has stabilised now and I have no symptoms and my gp is not concerned. Not sure what else I can do.

Have you delayed putting on the heating due to cost? You burn extra calories to keep yourself warm.

Bytheseaoneday · 12/11/2022 22:24

@Shopaholic123Go no

Menopause? My mums weight really dropped in menopause.

Bytheseaoneday · 12/11/2022 22:49

@Inspirationpending that’s a possible explanation though I’d understood weight gain was normally the issue.
