Mirena Coil - Should I have one fitted or not

I've been on the progestrogone only pill Cerazette for a while now, but have recently decided maybe I should swap to having the Mirena coil fitted as I'm useless at remembering to take pills!

Only problem is I have recently been treated for post natal depression and was on Venlafaxine up until end of Oct 07. I have read mixed reports on this being given to women with a history of PND.

Does anyone have any advice, experience with this coil?

have you thought about a copper coil?

I am thinking the mirena as you are fertile as soon as its taken out. we want another baby in the next couple of years

It can take a while to get periods back, and get pregnanct with Mirena (coil with hormone implant) it's the copper coil which if removed means you can get pregnant

www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=553&sectionId=23

this link explaines the difference

IUS is mirena
IUD is the coil (copper coil as I called it)

with mirena your periods will most likely stop

with a copper coil they will continue, and if you are use to the lighter withdrawal bleed you get with the oral contraceptive pill - you may find your periods heavy

I have this type, it is so great. Dr popped it in and I don't need to worry about it for 3 years

if the POP hasnt caused you any problems with depression then the mirena shouldnt.

i had huge problems with the mirena coil, but i have had the same problems with all hormonal contraception(ie mood swings, weight gain, etc)

i am on my 4th copper coil now,and i got pregnant the first cycle after having the last 3 removed(i have 5 children).

this coil is staying put

I love my Mirena, I hated barrier contraceptives, and was rubbish at remembering the pill. I love the minimal periods I've had since it went it, as I had suffered from heavy and painful ones for years.

And best of all, it goes in, and you can forget about it for five years, totally hassle free, unlike everything else I've tried.

mum2phoebs · 29/01/2008 21:46

Just heard bad things about the copper coil - heavy painful periods etc... Don't fancy that as I don't get any periods on my pill at the mo and to go from nothing to heavy would be a shock!!

I love it, but as you say I have heard bad things on here in relation to PND, I have suffered from mood swings in the past but no better or worse than with the coil, I havent had a period in 3 years and this is my 2nd mirena, I have had no adverse side effects.
