Hey.
Chronic migraine sufferer here.
Usually they don't last this long as I can find ways to deal with it and help myself.
I've tried everything I normally do, it felt like it went for about an hour but it returned sharpish. Usually once it goes from one side of my head it'll go the opposite side. But this has stayed the same side and we're now on day 3. I was sick the first day and nausea is still going strong.
It's all behind one eye, the eyebrow and all the way back over one half of my head to the neck. Prior to this I had visual auras which is normal for me anyway.
I'm just wondering how long do you or would you leave a migraine when you're a regular migraine sufferer without contacting the GP?

I buy migraitain over the counter it's £7 for 2 tablets you can buy two packs at a time. These are the only thing that help me

These ones. Can get from any pharmacy

gluteustothemaximus · 15/11/2022 20:12

Since mirena I get menstrual migraines which are about 3-4 days long.

Drinking bottled water with high levels of magnesium has really helped (Evian)

Avoiding stress before period also avoids a longer one.

Codeine when I can't take anymore.

PortalooSunset · 15/11/2022 20:57

Op (did you name change?) I hate to say it but you sound like I did when I had viral meningitis. Had a horrible one sided headache for over a week, nothing was shifting it, then it got so bad I tried rubbing Voltarol into my scalp to see if that would work! (Spoiler - it didn't!). Started vomiting too. GP sent me straight to assessment unit for CT and lumbar puncture.

I really hope you get some relief soon Flowers

I did yes. Haha.
Oh wow - that's really interesting. Sorry to hear you experienced that. But also, it never would of crossed my mind so it's worth keeping in mind now.
Well since I've started the tramadol this morning and the antibiotics, though I'm sure the antibiotics wouldn't of kicked in so quickly, the pain has eased. Feel a bit sicky but think that's due to the tramadol - which I'm also trying not to depend on so much as I know how addictive this stuff can be after reading up on it. I'm not quite sure what type of infection she thinks I have either so. 🤷‍♀️ for now I definitely feel more comfortable but whether it stays this way we shall see! Thank you for replying xx

Codeine is a no go for me. I get very poorly on it!
Will get some Evian in tomorrow too!

@Mamoun taking too many over a period of 30 days/1 month can make migraines more severe and/or more frequent. So I used to be prescribed 6 each time to last 1 month +. But none of my preventative meds ever worked so my migraines were quite frequent and bad and I could end up using them all over the course of a month. So they stopped prescribing them to me. Which is annoying when it's the only thing that ever stopped an attack, even the worst of the worst, in it's tracks.
Would 100% recommend if you're able to somehow get your migraines down to a reasonable amount per month meaning you're able to use sumatriptan sensibly and within reason x

Yes I have been using sumatriptan and it's been an absolute game changer. Each time I am surprised by the efficiency.
I'll ask my mum about the effects of too much Triptan as she's been a long term user.

Mamoun · 15/11/2022 23:04

And yes I get one or two a month so it is manageable. Didn't have any before having kids but my mum is a lifelong sufferer, although better since menopause apparently.

Quite a few people have stated that they've either stopped or lessened since menopause.
I'm 30, and have been suffering since I was 15/16. The only time I've had proper breaks from no attacks is whilst I've been pregnant. But I'm done at 3 children, so I won't be experiencing that again haha.

Sumatriptan is probably the ONLY medication that has ever worked but they refused to keep prescribing it because I was taking it more often than they'd like because of how frequent my migraines were/are. So I gave up, and got fed up with trying all different medicines tbf, it's not doing my body any good. So now I just lump it and deal with it. I was taking sumatriptan alongside amitryptline but I've got 3 young children and couldn't wake up to them in the night.m so 🤷‍♀️ We are now on day 4. 🙃 thank you for your reply x

I was on sumatriptan but they changed it to rizatriptan which works well but I buy sumatriptan as well now online! £15 for 6 100mg which I often break in half, it seems to abate them, i but then once a month xx

Dodie66 · 15/11/2022 23:41

Caffien really helps me. A cup,of tea and take painkillers at the same time. The doc said it makes the painkillers work better and constricts the blood vessels

Rainbowshit · 15/11/2022 23:47

I had a month long migraine 8 years ago now. It was solved by a dental splint to stop me grinding my teeth.

You're the second one to say you buy them online now. I'm going to do this! They were an absolute god send in times of absolute hell!! Thank you 🥰 xx

Caffeine sometimes helps my more usual attacks. Other times like these, it just doesn't touch the sides annoyingly!!! X

Interesting!
Was it pretty obvious that, that was the cause from the get go? Have you had none since or?

Knockmealdowns · 16/11/2022 06:33

Can I ask does anyone get vertigo with their headache? I get a pain my left side of head and my balance goes off for up to 8 days? My Epley manoeuvre doesn’t work and the epley test is negative. I’ve been told it’s vestibular neuritis, but I often wondered if it was migraine.. and like everyone else here, I d nearly eat lava if I thought it would ease it!!

Sounds like a vestibular migraine!!
I don't quite get vertigo but my balance can go during the time of the attack and for a few hours/couple days later. My speech can also slur!
Horrible things migraines aren't they xx

No, not obvious at all. It actually was diagnosed as vestibular migraine. I am lucky enough to have private medical care through my work and it was the ENT that diagnosed it. My GP thought it was BPPV and would be resolved with the epley manoeuvre.

I had heating tests to rule out something I can't remember the name of and an MRI.

I already had the dental splint for teeth grinding I just never wore it. Regular wearing has cut out the vestibular migraine and ocular migraines I used to get.

Chronic migraine sufferer here. React to sumatriptan and codine. What finally solved it for me was 10 sessions of acupuncture. Life changing.

Justwingingitox · 16/11/2022 08:04

@Rainbowshit I'm glad you found out what seemed to be causing you the trouble and pain! There's nothing worse than a lingering pain and you have no way of getting rid or knowing what's causing it. Are you completely migraine free now? Thank you for sharing your experience x

Admittedly acupuncture is something I've never really looked in to properly because I've never liked the thought of it. I'm glad it has helped you! Had it stopped them completely or cut them down quite a bit? X

Chronic migraine sufferer also, normal meds don't work for me, I've gone to A&E After 2 weeks and was admitted. Ring the GP today

friskybivalves · 16/11/2022 08:49

@Justwingingitox I think it is time to ask your GP for a neurology referral. You say you've tried a lot of other medications - so had I (amitriptyline, triptans, candesartan...things I can't even remember now. Nothing worked and awful side effects for me). Once under a consultant neurologist I started to have first of all nerve blocker injections in my head - sounds horrendous but surprisingly not, and fairly effective for me. And then they put me on the monthly CGRP injection which is the all time game changer. You need to nag! Be persistent! Don't be fobbed off. I was, for years. I look back now at a ten-year wasteland of either pain or worrying about the next day's pain while GPs fiddled about either in the name of saving money or because they didn't really know much about a complex medical issue.

I went to see the GP yesterday.. I was given amoxicillin and tramadol. This is because she thought that it was no longer a typical chronic migraine and because my temp was slightly raised at 37.4.. she thought the migraine was down to an infection somewhere. 🤷‍♀️ I'm quite wary on the tramadol and will only take one at a time. And when it does ease off the pain is still slightly there. As for the antibiotics I don't expect them to work yet.. that's if there is any infection there. 🤷‍♀️

User963 · 16/11/2022 09:11

Mine last 3-4 days usually for pre-menstrual migraines. Triptans definitely help but for day 3/ 4 when I think I shouldn't have another triptan (I have one on day 1 and one on day 2) I add caffeine to any painkillers. I've also found taking the sumatriptan with paracetamol and caffeine tablets makes it last for longer.

As you are on day 8 and also have respiratory infection symptoms have you done a covid test? Lots of people have had long migraines/ headaches with covid. Hope you feel better soon.
