Wavy lines / haze in periphery vision ?

historicalnews · 09/11/2022 14:01

I've never had this before - does anyone else have experience. Was sitting at work when vision felt blurry. Lots of wavy lines to side of right eye. It was like the wavy haze you see ahead on a very hot day.

Lasted about 20 minutes and really odd. I've had a mild headache today but nothing serious or that I could describe as like a migraine.

In case relevant - I'm early 50's. Hormonal (?)

Sounds like a migraine. It doesn’t need to be accompanied by a headache. I’ve had this a few times and I don’t get a headache usually either. I tend to take Migraleve and have a lie down.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 09/11/2022 14:09

Sounds exactly like my migraines. Blurry patches in my vision for under an hour followed by a headache.

Mabelface · 09/11/2022 14:10

Migraine aura. I get them without the headache, zig zag lines etc and it goes in about 20 minutes. If course if it happens again, get it checked out.

Another vote for migraine aura. I went though a phase of having it, with or without a headache, in my late thirties. Then they just stopped.

MammaWeasel · 09/11/2022 14:18

Ocular migraine.

historicalnews · 09/11/2022 14:25

That's really interesting - thanks everyone. I just dismissed migraine because there wasn't the severe headache that I'd always assumed would be there. I'll look it up.

Same. When I had it I didn't get the headache. I have had migraine separately, not with the vision disturbance, but headache/tiredness/nausea and that lasted about 12 hours and then I was fine.

historicalnews · 09/11/2022 14:27

(It's a year since last period and I've got so many random symptoms which I think may all be linked in some way.)

I get migraine and have never had what you would call a severe headache, it always makes me sick though, I occasionally get an aura of zig zag lines but not always

Adeleex · 09/11/2022 16:51

Another vote for migraine aura.
Chronic migraine sufferer here. Sometimes I get it without a migraine randomly, but majority of the time it's one of my first signs I'm about to have an attack or it comes on during. Hope you're feeling better now x

Thank you everyone. It did feel very odd - good to get all the input

Interestingly I had my first migraine aura minus the severe headache last week. I was highly confused as once my vision goes funky that’s usually me for the rest of the day with the headache.

SophieJo · 09/11/2022 20:11

I have this occasionally and went to the opticians whilst one was happening. It’s an ocular migraine and last for about 20 minutes. No headache just fuzzy vision round the edges.

Just out of interest - are any of you in peri or full menopause ?

No.

Mumzoo5070 · 09/11/2022 20:38

I know someone who had wavy lines and it turned out to be optic neuritis if I recall correctly.

Snozzlemaid · 09/11/2022 20:40

I'm 50 and experienced exactly this for the first time last week as well.
I guessed it was probably a migraine as dp suffers with similar symptoms when he gets a migraine.
But it was a bit unnerving at first.

I've no idea if I'm in peri menopause as I have no other symptoms and don't have periods anyway as I have a coil.

tobee · 09/11/2022 21:41

What I did when o had this a few years ago was do some google images of migraine with aura and the pictures exactly matched. Went to gp as well.

historicalnews · 09/11/2022 22:32

Thanks everyone - will keep an eye on it

Optometrist here, it may just be an ophthalmic migraine, but it also may be due to something pulling on your retina - the most probable cause would be a posterior vitreous detachment (which is fairly common when you're over 50).

It doesn't usually cause any major issues, but you need to have an eye exam to rule out any tears/holes in the retina.

User438651209 · 11/11/2022 05:12

I had posterior vitreous detachment, I was late 50s, and had a couple of strange lines appear and the odd small flashing light in bed at night at the side of my eye and loads of floaters appeared, optician checked my eye as I went there to have it looked at first and I was referred to the hospital for a more thorough check, luckily everything was ok but it was a PVD, luckily pretty much all the floaters disappeared after a few months. It may be worth going to the optician for a check up.

Sorry I've only just seen the last two messages. It hasn't happened again but will make an appointment with optician for a check. Thanks for help

I didn’t realise that it’s a free check up on the NHS at your opticians. You have to fill in a form afterwards.
