DD has a horrible graze on her knee and wont let me clean it - is it the end of the world?

Her leg wont drop off or anything will it?

Seriously though - she's got quite a nasty graze but wont let me clean it (made worse by the fact that she's got a school friend round for tea) and I can see there is some grit and dirt in it.

I've put a sodden wet lump of cotton wool on it and wrapped a bandage over the top (had no plasters ).

Will I need to clean it at some point or other? She may well let DH clean it when he's home in a few hours............

Would she usually have a bath in the evening? If so then just swish some clean water over it when she has a bath (or shower) as soon as her friend goes. It's not ideal I guess but if it was my dd I would be happy to leave it for a couple of hours. (if you were on a day out rather than at home you would probably leave it for a few hours without worrying unduly)

x-posts with FioFio!

Have you got any Germolene? Put a great big dollop under the bandage and that will help until it's bath time!

needmorecoffee · 29/01/2008 16:46

she'll be fine. Just don't let drip ick onto any furniture.

PMSL

Even if DS wees in the bath???????? [dramatic for no reason emoticon]

I'm probably sounding all dramatic, when she did it, I just strolled over to her and picked her up. She was hysterical and blood dripping everywhere from her nose and her knee.

She really stacked it - was running ahead (despite me telling her a dozen times to stop), and went to step up on a huge gnarled root of an oak tree and her foot slipped. Her face really slapped the floor. She had a nose bleed the whole way home. Her poor little friend didnt quite know what to make of it. Although did keep repeating "I dont cry anymore when I fall over"

I agree with FioFio. Put her in the bath for a while. The graze will be clean without her knowing about it. Check it in a few days. If there is any "angry" redness around the wound, that would indicate infection. But in the bath for the next few days should eliminate that worry.

VVVQV · 29/01/2008 16:49

oh god I dont think I even have anything like germaline...

We so rarely need stuff like that. Usually, when there is an injury it's always bad enough to end up in A & E anyway

Got to mind her skin - she has eczma. I think she's got a graze on the bridge of her nose

Just as well they have rubbery bones!!!!

dettol in the bath? that's what my friend's mum - a nurse - always did when her kids fell. i was always very impressed by her professional response!

bookwormmum · 29/01/2008 16:52

If it's bled freely, won't the wound be clean anyway? she may let you clean it later - perhaps it's a bit of bravado in front of her friend to make up for crying in shock.

BettySpaghetti · 29/01/2008 16:53

If shes like my DD and is likely to be a drama queen in the bath, not wanting to get the graze wet, put her in the shower instead. You won't have the fight about immersing it in water .

Twinkie1 · 29/01/2008 16:55

You must clean it - XH got a kidney infection from a graze on the knee - reckoned it stunted his growth! (Think he was a short twat but we won't go there!)

bookwormmum · 29/01/2008 17:01

I got a knee infection from tripping over on a stone path.... and not getting it dressed properly at the time. Mind my tetanus was years out of date.

I was 23 .

bookwormmum · 29/01/2008 17:02

One to go on the 'things I cringe about now' thread I think

Psychomum5 · 29/01/2008 17:02

the grit should actually just get caught in the scab, so you shouldn't theoratically need to worry......BUT......you are her mummy so will anyway.

when mine have done this, and then screamed at any and all attempts to clean it, I have either wacked cream on it, then gauze, taped down with micro-pore, and dealt with later in a bath with dettol....OR.....got some of that savlon spray, held them down, and sprayed liberally before running quickly from their thrashing limbs....

so far, no infection, but then, they get ill all the sodding time anyway so it may in fact be me being neglectfull in the first place.

I would say tho, if it has bled freely then most of it should be 'washed' away and a soak later will be good enough for the rest.....and keep an eye later in the week for possible signs of infection.

HTH

VVVQV · 29/01/2008 17:52

No, I wouldnt say it bled freely. Her nose did though!

She had tights on, which I dont think has helped.

She actually had a bigger rip in her tights on the other leg that was entirely graze free!

There is no way I'm putting dettol in her bath - not with her skin the way it is. It'd be sods law too that she gets an infection - she gets everything. DS - who must have 9 lives or something - never gets anything.

will she do it herself? using a jug of warm water very carefully? my eldest(whose 14 so no excuse) his like that bu if i let him do it at his own pace he either will let me do it ..or he starts doing it and lets me help.....actually been a while since we had scabby knees here at doo towers lol

VVVQV · 29/01/2008 18:27

No, she wont do herself. Have tried that tack already.

She's now whining about having a bath.....

I have that Savlon spray too. Dd1 is ridiculous with this sort of thing (she gets hysterical when I cut her toenails ) so the spray is great for us. I flood the area with the stuff and cross my fingers.
