Root canal extraction - your story

Lovegossip · 07/11/2022 12:46

Had extreme tooth ache yesterday, went to emergency dentist and xray shows the wisdom tooth is broken with damage to the root canal, I have antibiotics to clear the infection and pain but they said it will need removing, just how painful will it be? I'm not good with pain and dreading it already

It isn't painful at all, they put lots of anaesthetic in it first. I've had 6 teeth removed, four big wisdoms and dental implants for the other two.
I didn't feel any pain just felt tugging and pulling. It didn't bother me at all.
The after extraction is fine just take some painkillers if there is any pain, I don't normally need to.

Whycanineverever · 07/11/2022 12:48

Nowhere near as much as I was expecting. Easily handled by normal strength Nurofen.

Although I believe it is possible to get something called dry socket which is very painful.

Pipsickl · 07/11/2022 12:48

I had 2 failed root canals on the same tooth and ended up having it taken out.

the root canal treatment did not hurt. When the treatment failed I could only tell as the tooth was still sensitive.

I wouldn’t worry about having a root can treatment - in both cases mine was just like a long filling.

having the tooth out in the end was only painful for the afternoon of the extraction.

you will be fine - always best to get it done asap with teeth 🙂🙂🙂

The pain you are suffering now is 100 times worse than an extraction.

AnonGCMum · 07/11/2022 12:49

The procedure itself wasn’t at all painful, certainly a relief when compared to the pain before I had it done. (Actually it did hurt right at the start, but I said so and they gave me another anaesthetic injection then it was fine.)

Whycanineverever · 07/11/2022 12:49

Oh during it I had tons of anaesthetic as I really cannot cope with dentist. Wasn't really much pain more tugging but how I cannot cope with it at all

mac1974 · 07/11/2022 12:56

My experience wasn't great but that was just bad luck. I had an infection which was hideously painful. Infection treated and the dentist wanted to do root canal. All fine. However the root canal failed and the infection came back. The worst pain ever. Unfortunately due to the infection the anaesthetic wouldn't take properly so the extraction was very very painful. However, the relief when it was over was worth it. It wasn't the dentists fault I was determined to persevere and get the tooth out & they did give me one final shot which took the pain away just before the tooth popped out. Anyway, moral of the story....get the tooth out before infection makes it tricky and make sure you get all the anaesthetic!

maddy68 · 07/11/2022 12:56

Not at all painful. I have had several. All absolutely fine

balzamico · 07/11/2022 12:59

I had root canal treatment last Thursday. Not painful at all, not even the needle for the numbing. I was an hour in the chair and some of the noises weren't great but I now have no pain so it was totally worth it

Lovegossip · 07/11/2022 14:05

It's the needle in the gum I'm dreading, I had a lump on my tongue removed and had to have injection into my tongue and that was painful, I was whimpering like a wounded animal, I don't mind injections into the arms etc

Absolutely agree with PP, the root canal itself isn't at all painful - the pain you're having now will be way worse. Tell the dentist you're nervous about the injections and they may give you extra numbing gel, or in some cases they have dentists who specialise in "needlework" At my dentist nervous patients can request the person who also does facial aesthetics as she works with needles all the time.

mac1974 · 07/11/2022 16:57

Needle in the gum is fine honestly. It's over very quickly. Try just to breathe through it & not think about it

tocahairchop · 07/11/2022 17:10

I didn't have a good experience with extraction at all but I'd recommend listening to music. I do that for all dental procedures now... headphones in, eyes closed and pretend to be somewhere else! Don't rinse/gargle after the extraction for the first day or so (dry socket is v painful)

Obia · 07/11/2022 17:13

I've not had a wisdom tooth removed but recently I had to have a molar extracted, due to my tooth breaking badly eating Toblerone. I was beyond scared. I had two injections into the gum and one into the roof of my mouth. I honestly felt nothing. My face was numb for a couple of hours. Virtually no pain afterwards. It didn't even take two minutes to take out the tooth and I didn't need any painkillers afterwards.

I have also had a root canal filling, again no pain but it takes about an hour and then the tooth is dressed and left for a couple of weeks to make sure that it doesn't get infected then a crown was put on the tooth. It's a long process but honestly pain free.

I am ridiculously frightened of the dentist, not sure why as I've honestly never been hurt by one.

Lovegossip · 08/11/2022 21:58

Antibiotics are working, taking with a nurofen codeine mix, the pain has been replaced with entire face ache 😢

Blowyourowntrumpet · 08/11/2022 22:00

It's fine. A lot of crunching noise though

Lovegossip · 03/12/2022 15:30

So I had a follow up appointment this week, emergency dentist at the original appointment prescribed antibiotics, new dentist confirmed that the infection has cleared and there is no root canal work needed or any damaged teeth

Tbh when I went to the emergency dentist, I was in a lot of pain, concentration and listening skills were not happening

New dentist now has my xray and did some testing of my gums and teeth, only recommendation were a regular teeth clean and plaque extraction to prevent any future infections, I have no pain in that area anymore so that's good

The greatest pain was the cost!

RobinHumphries · 03/12/2022 18:57

Well one of those dentists isn’t telling the truth. Badly broken teeth needing root canal don’t just magically repair themselves.
personally I won’t do root canal on a wisdom tooth - they are so far back in the mouth access is difficult and the anatomy of the tooth is very unpredictable

Lovegossip · 03/12/2022 19:36

I think the 1st dentist wasn't totally trueful, the 2nd one was recommended by my mother and sister as they both go there, I'm inclined to believe him though

The greatest pain was the cost!

It's been quite non expensive so far, was £23 for emergency appointment and then the follow up was £21, if I go with the dentists teeth clean plan then he's quoted £90, is that normal ?

OP posts:
lazymum99 · 03/12/2022 19:58

Root canal privately cost me over £1,000. So yes you are doing ok with that plan!

KittensNotMittens · 11/12/2022 11:17

Dare I ask cost? My dentist has said that mine is ‘too complicated’ and has referred me to a private dentist.
