Anyone tried alternative medicines for continual snot?

My DS (3) is never without a runny nose. He's been at the doctors several times and was even referred to hospital to see if he'd stuck something up it. Ironically that happened the one week when he didn't have snot. He wasn't back home an hour when it started again. He did get ABs once and it seemed to clear it up but after the next cold it was back again. The docs seem reluctant to keep administering ABs but I just want to give the poor wee soul a break. Because he breathes through his mouth all the time, this means he dribbles constantly too. I'm starting to get queer looks from folk like I'm neglecting him or something. I've tried echineacea but not noticed a difference

So has anyone experienced similar and tried homeopathic or other alternative remedies with any success?

you could definitely try something homeopathic but for a chronic condition like you're describing you're much better off actually consulting a homeopath than just buying an acute remedy off the shelf. You can ask your GP for a referral or search ?herewww.trusthomeopathy.org/trust/tru_sea.html? or ?herewww.homeopathy-soh.org?

hmm, those links didn't come out quite the way I planned!

Dairy intake can also contribute to increased mucous production. Your homeopath may well discuss this if you attend a consultation - definitely don't just get any old remedy off the shelf.

Could be allergies.

Try an anti-histamine?

i saw a homeopath for a constant snotty nose; she had successfully treated me for insomnia and something else ( i've forgotten what!) but the snottiness was the least succesful, i have to admit. would try it again though if i could afford it.

Sounds a little like Rhinnitus. It is an allergic inflamation of the nose lining. I have had it for nearly two years. I have to spray steroids up my nose every day. Almost keeps it at bay. I dont wake up covered in snot any more so thats nice!
I have tried every over the counter homepathic remedy. None of them worked at all for me!

pulsatilla

First thing i would do was stop dairy and see if it makes a difference.

Sugarmagnolia · 31/01/2008 07:39

yes, possibly pulsatilla, or nat mur or hydrastis or 3 or 4 others. Or for a chronic condition he might be better off with what's called a constitutional remedy. That's why I would say consult a homeopath. Over the counter treatment is great for acute conditions but that's not the case here.

But is it an allergy if it's bright green? I always believed that was definitely an infection. Surely the ABs he'd had before wouldn't have cleared it up (albeit until his next cold) if he was allergic to dairy?

You could do a dairy free trial and see if it makes any difference. You would need to cut out all dairy (milk, butter, cheese, milk chocolate etc) for a period of a couple of weeks. A short term trial is not going to do him any harm, although if you decide to go dairy free for good you might want to consult your GP or a nutritionist for advice on how to replace missing nutrients.
