Having a fasting blood test tomorrow BUT

I have the worst indigestion at night and the only way I can get any sleep is by drinking Gaviscon, chewing Rennies and (most importantly) sipping milk for the first few hours after going to bed.
Does this mean I can't have any of these? I need 12 hours and appointment is at 9.45- would it be really bad if I had a tiny amount of milk (say half a glass) up until about midnight? And what about Rennies?

Is it a glucose tolerance test?

If so, I would say no to the milk as it has sugar in, as does gaviscon, and probably rennies. Sorry!

madmommy6 · 29/01/2008 12:24

Hmm When dh has to have a fasting blood test he can't have anything but water for 12 hrs before. So if test is 10am nothing after 10pm.Sorry

Haylstones · 29/01/2008 12:31

I guess it is a glucose tese, keep getting extremely thirsty.
I really will get noooo sleep without them, am going to cry now.
It's so bad I would really be tempted to cancel the appointment

couldn't you go to bed earlier? So start the remedies earlier?

shrooms · 29/01/2008 12:41

Could you try taking your remedies at 8pm and then sleeping with your head raised?

Haylstones · 29/01/2008 12:45

I normally go to bed about 9.30 and am kept awake on and off until about 11.30/12, have to keep sitting up and taking or drinking something. I already sleep propped up on pillows, don't eat after 7pm and it doesn't really help much.
I hadn't thought about htis until now and I'm panicking! I neeeeed my sleep!

I did this last week. I don't think you can take rennies/gaviscon or milk as these will affect the result.

Can you get a ranitidine prescription from the docs - these tablets are more effective and will last longer. I took one before I had to fast and was fine throughout the night (if I do gaviscon, I have to take them all through the evening/night).

Warning though - I did get the most terrible heartburn from the lucozade and felt really awful - of course couldn't take a gaviscon or anything.

I also had my appointment at 8am - is there anyway of moving yours earlier?

Thanks, I can't change appointment as I had to wait a week for it. This is the third attempt- no.1 wasn't sufficient, no.2 was rejected because it wasn't a fasting test (nobody told me it had to be!) and each appointment has been a week apart. I guess it's also too late in the day for a precription for anything else.
I'm 36+ wks pg hence the indigestion. I just need to work out how much I REALLY need the test done.

You can get ranitidine over the counter as either an own brand drug { Tesco and Sainsbury both do it }or as Zantac but you would need to check if it was ok to use in pregnancy

madmommy6 · 29/01/2008 14:02

Diabetes while pg is common so very important you have the fasting test.link for you to read
I don't want to worry you but you should be checked.

2sugars · 29/01/2008 14:19

I asked this on MN last year. I had a cup of tea with milk & sugar. MN said no and so did the practice nurse when I called that morning. Sorry.

Haylstones · 29/01/2008 14:57

I suppose I knew I had to have it done, just can't face the thought of no sleep tonight! Will try going to bed really early and putting up as mich as i can

I take ranitidine in pregnancy - it is much more effective than gaviscon. my doctor prescribes it for me (I'm 32 weeks)

Chopster · 30/01/2008 07:54

hope you got some sleep haylstones. Good luck today. x

madmommy6 · 30/01/2008 09:31

Hope all goes well and you got some sleep last night.

Haylstones · 30/01/2008 14:08

Thank you. I got some sleep (never enough though) but with pg hormones -that's my escuse anyway- the appointment was actually yesterday so I've had to rebook for next week. Looks like I have to do it all again .
On a positive note, my previously breech baby is now 3/5 engaged and in perfect position for delivery
