Why does my Mum keep getting infections?

In September her leg got infected to the point that the doc said it was a 'limb threatening condition' and so she took notice and rested it for a couple of days. She was prescribed 2 different lots of antibiotics to clear it up.

After that she was given the 'new' pnuemonococcal (sp.?) jab as 'it would prevent her getting any 'pnuemonia-type infections'.

Since around about then she has had a persistent sore throat and cough which at one point was so violent and unrelenting it made her throw up. She still has a bad throat now.
Now she has an eye infection and says it looks like 'red jelly' (sorry TMI).

My feeling is that the antibiotics lowered her resistence to other bacterial infections. I've suggested she take vits and acidopholous. She said she already takes vits. She is thinking of going to see a nutritionist at a very good alternative medicine place which I have also used to good results in the past.

I am abroad so can't help her or make sure she looks after herself. She is nearly 69, still works and lives alone in Scotland. She has been to the doc and coincidentally is part of a random group of elderly people whose health is being monitored for a study, so has regular check-ups.

Does anyone have an insight into why she should be getting all these infections and is it normal to have a bad throat for over 4 months?
Thanks.

it can be in the elderly as immune is lower and if had tjhat virus that has just gone around i had sore throat and cough for ioverb 2 months

weather doesnt help as cold dries your throat out

could have conjunctivitus maybe eye drops should clear it or bathe with bicarb or optrex

i would put most down to age and weather as long as docs are keeping eye on her ten she sounds in good hands

sorry couldnt be more help i worked with elderly and always this time of year they would come down with something especially if immune system already low then its so easy just to pick one thing up after another my ds 2.7 was ill for 3 months as immune system was low he picked up virus's one after the other

i hope your mum feels better soon if in doubt maybe doc could run a few blood tests to rule some thigs out

Thanks again bubblagirl!

She said she'd had some blood tests but hadn't been given the results and was assuming if there was a problem they'd have told her. I told her to ask for the results in case they've gone missing or something!
I think the long Scottish winter after a pretty poor summer hasn't helped...
