Palpitations

ladygoingGaga · 02/11/2022 22:23

like most people I’ve noticed the odd heart palpitation.
However last few weeks I’ve had significantly more, most evenings watching tv get them every 5-10 minutes.
managed to catch them on my Apple Watch, and looks like extra beats, 3 or more in a row.
bloods taken and ecg done by the nurse done this week all normal.
Im waiting for a follow up phone call, should I push for a longer monitor period so they can see just how many I get?

Do you have access to your bloods ?

The threshold for 'normal' can be quote low especially for ferritin, iron, certain vitamins. If your ferritin is under 70 for example it can cause palpitations, but GPS won't flag it as a concern unless under 20.

If it's not that it could be anxiety related, I think palpitations can be harmless often and just your normal, but I'd be requesting a referral to rule out anything sinister.

I used to get these regularly, often after eating. I've been checked out by the GP and nothing seems to be amiss. After googling, I tried dousing my face in ice cold water, so you have a huge a sharp intake of breath? This apparently re-sets the vagus nerve and my palpitations seem to stop after that. Also holding your nose and trying to blow through it sometimes works. I never did get to the bottom of what caused them, but I haven't had an 'episode' for ages. It is scary though when they start isn't it?

Emmasian94 · 03/11/2022 14:38

I'm 28 and last month I had them for 3 days, then disappeared. Now they've come back and I'm currently on day 5 of them. I've had them here and there throughout my life but nothing like this. Like you doctors have done bloods etc and all 'normal'. It also seems to link with my ovulation period - I'm trying to track it currently. I absolutely hate this.

ladygoingGaga · 04/11/2022 22:29

Yes it is scary. I think it must be linked to hormones too, although I’m post menopausal and been on HRT for a few years something is kicking it off

Palpitations are also linked to the Covid vaccine (I'm getting them and the cardiologist says the link is known).
Ask for a 6/7 day monitor and bloods.

damekindness · 04/11/2022 22:35

I found I had palpitations around the perimenopause - they settled down post menopause and disappeared. No clues why they occurred. You have my sympathies though as I found them really quite frightening

Maybe ask GP for 24 hour ECG monitoring?

justasking111 · 04/11/2022 22:39

I had all the tests. After eating sometimes, caffeine a no-no. All related to menopause I think plus a hiatus hernia which irri

justasking111 · 04/11/2022 22:39

Hiatus hernia reflux irritates the vagus nerve I think

Baconand · 04/11/2022 22:42

It can come with indigestion/GERD. I get bouts of them and even though I feel ok otherwise, acid reflux medication makes them go away. Weird.

KangarooKenny · 05/11/2022 07:15

I got palpitations with anaemia.

MiniMaxi · 05/11/2022 07:36

Worth having your thyroid checked too.

I get them when my thyroxine dose is wrong, when I’ve had too much sugar / alcohol / caffeine / am tired in combination, and for a solid month after the Covid booster.

twordle · 05/11/2022 07:46

I am the same. Mostly evenings but pretty constant. Had it since Feb - started 2 weeks after covid jab.... but prob more hormonal. I'm 48 & on hrt, not helping.., It's really awful & I feel for you. Doc has now referred me to cardiology after trying on beta blockers.. they made it worse!!!??!! Anyone it's v reassuring there are others in same boat, I too have hiatus hernia & notice it's worse after eating so that's interesting. I've started magnesium taurate & vit d, plus magnesium baths.. seems to have reduced intensity of them.. good luck OP, keep us posted with any feedback from doc or solutions!

I’ve been having the floor the past few weeks too op. Similar to how you describe too. They taken all day, but more noticeable in the evening. I even went to a&e last week as I had a panic attack over them.

I have had my bloods checked and I have low iron… ferratin 11. And slightly under active thyroid. I have an 24hr ecg booked on monday.

But!!!…. When I got my
blood results back 4 days ago I started on the feraglobin iron supplement and within a day the palpitations have stopped… except for the occasional flutter of an evening. But the difference if amazing

I've checked my ferritin and mine is 25. Doctor said normal but the NICE guidelines says anything under 30 is deficient so I'm confused! Did you experience any joint pain/bone aches too? Xx

Thank you for your reply! My ferritin level has come back at 25. So like you said they've said it's normal 😬

I hadn’t noticed anything else except tiredness. But just put that down to fulltime work and parenting!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 05/11/2022 20:03

I had them when I had Covid, and then developed an overactive thyroid, when I had them a lot. Also, years ago when I was anaemic I was breathless and had palpitations.

ladygoingGaga · 06/11/2022 22:33

I’m strangely reassured that it seems quite common. Had bloods taken and my thyroid seems okay.
Had a quiet weekend for them, starting to wonder if it’s work related!
