Diabetes- how to convince gp to check?

Boxshibe · 02/11/2022 18:39

I'm concerned that I have diabetes.
I'm exhausted- can sleep for 12 hours a day. Need a nap at often as I can
I'm itchy
I'm always thirsty
I going to the toilet a lot - every hour or so
I've lost weight without trying.

I went to the doctor a few months ago and had a blood test everything came back fine.
Dh has diabetes and over the last few weeks I've done a couple of finger prick blood tests and they have been between 9-11. I believe normal sugar level should be 5 and under.

What should I say to the gp to take me seriously about this?

Just say exactly the above.

Some pharmacies also offer diabetes testing.

What was the test you had at the doctors, what time of day, fasting? What were your levels then?

You cant judge it by finger prick tests because it depends on time of day and what you've eaten.

I remember stupidly doing a test just after Id eaten some raisins and I think I still had raisiny hands, forgot to wash them before the figures were through the roof and frightened the life out of me until I realised what Id done.

Are you lacking in folic acid or b vitamins that might also explain some of your symptoms.

There's a guide to normal and diabetic ranges here:

The blood test was done in the morning I hadn't eaten.
The finger prick tests I've done at various times of day.

Buy a testing kit and take random tests. Pre breakfast is ideal. Not within 2 hours of eating.
Log results and take them to GP. See a different GP if you can and think this would be a good idea.
Say you think the results show you need a GTT, glucose tolerance test. This is the gold standard for diagnosis.
The above is assuming you are getting results as previously.
I was fobbed off for two years until I did the above.

I have T1D(40 years) and if my bg was 9 -11 then I would need extra doses of insulin.

No wonder you are thirsty and losing weight

Go to a walk in clinic if you can

A lot of chemists near me will check you for diabetes, it would be much quicker than trying to get a Dr appointment if anywhere near you do it too.

Boxshibe, could I possibly ask if you got another test and what the outcome was ?
