Colposcopy- scared

Hi all. I have a colposcopy tomorrow and tbh I'm pretty scared (despite everyone saying it's a perfectly normal procedure blah blah).

I had a smear in January which came back inconclusive (I bled a lot during the smear). I was meant to have one repeated in 3 months but I stupidly kept putting it off. I just had it done again in sept (bled again) and it came back positive for HPV and also had abnormal cell changes. The doctor said that it could take around 2 months for colposcopy, but I got one within 2 weeks which makes me concerned about the urgency. I'm in Ireland and they don't offer anaesthesia for the procedure.

I'm not even sure what I'm asking, I'm just very worried due to bad cramping and occasional bleeding. I'm 36. Has anyone experienced similar?

A colostomy is literally just a big smear and your feet are in stirrups. I did pass out but then I used to pass out all the time for things like that. You'll be fine!

I'm in a similar boat, Thursday for my colposcopy, I got a call on Monday before I'd even had the letter with my results back.

I'm slightly more concerned as I had a smear around 18 months ago that was positive for HPV but no cell changes and when the letter eventually arrived today from my smear in September it said 'moderate cell changes' (I should have gone back in Jan but I put it off then when I did book I had to cancel twice because I was having a period both times)

I've been having about 2-3 'periods' a month and pelvic and lower back pain that I'd put down to having their Mirena coil fitted in sept '21.

All in all, not feeling positive about it, I'm 37 and just hoping for the best. Fingers crossed yours goes well.

I had a colposcopy at 23 as I was too young for a smear and the doctor said underage smears get thrown in the bin so let's skip a step. I had mine within two weeks.

I originally had it because I kept bleeding in between periods and after being dismissed by 2 male doctors I finally got to see a women doctor.

The procedure itself was a little uncomfortable but not painful but I was very tense. They tend to have a lovely nurse at your top end to really reassure you.

Not sure if they still do it this way but she doctor carrying out the colposcopy did actually say once I was dressed to come to the side room for the results. Which I found a lot better getting the results there and then. Thankfully all fine.

Hey all - had it earlier. She ended up needing to take 5 biopsies so I'm quiet sore now. They were very nice and explained everything. I'm quite concerned though as I could see the changes myself on the screen

@Naivenelly glad you're done for today at least. Did they say how long you'd wait for the results

Naivenelly · 03/11/2022 00:05

She said about 4 weeks, I'm not in UK though but I think that's standard!

I had worse case outcome but the worrying about the result is the worst time. 9 years later it’s all just a bad memory. I’m sure it will all be fine but even if it’s not, most cases are treated with a great success rate.
Fingers crossed for you.
