Diverticulitis sufferers

Recently diagnosed with diverticulosis and think I'm having a flare up. It's been the last 2 or 3 days. What's your go to food to help settle it. I've got a long awaited wedding to go at the weekend and want to be on top form.

Thanks

Hi cittigirl
Sorry to hear you haven't had an answer.

I'm not sure I am going to be much help but I am awaiting a colonoscopy for a most likely diverticulitis diagnosis (so says the consultant anyway). It does seem to fit and both my mum and my paternal grandmother has/had it.
Whatever it is going on I have woken up today with the beginnings of a flare up so I have stuck to a mini bottle of gut health juice (pineapple, mango, coconut milk) from M&S for breakfast and a tiny bit of thinned butternut squash soup for lunch.

I had read that liquids, no fibre was best to soothe a flare up.
Especially as I need to work tonight in a public facing role.

So, I'm afraid I'm not someone with much advice or expertise at this stage but would be happy to have a supportive group to chat through it if you do too.

My DH has diverticulitis, his consultant says if he has a flare up antibiotics are needed to help settle it down, which it does. He isn’t particularly hungry when he has a flare up, so sticks to soup, salmon and jacket potatoes, brown toast, bananas, lots of water, no alcohol. A nurse when DH had his last scan said to include papaya fruit in diet which seems to work.

Thanks mindymomo. That's really helpful. Especially about the papaya. Is that good as a regular thing when eating fibre or when there is a flare up?

I'm just trying to get my head around all of this.

I was hoping I could manage a flare up with diet if I caught it early enough? Does your dh always need antibiotics when he is feeling unwell? I have had some extreme reactions this year and obviously not had antibiotics because it wasn't known what it was. I'm not against having them but wondering if there is a sliding scale. Any advice is welcome.

I also didn't feel hungry today, in fact struggled with the little I did eat.

DH only has antibiotics when the pain is bad, but he usually is pain free after a couple of days, only eating small meals. has small amount of papaya each day. His consultant said he just has to try and manage it eating lots of fruit and veg, brown rice and brown bread.

Thanks Mindymomo. That's useful to read.

I definitely feel better today from having had a light liquid diet yesterday. Of course it could be coincidence but maybe this has helped head a huge reaction off at the pass. I've been quite ill at times in this past year and a half. Pain, vomiting, diarrhea, lots of bleeding. All which has knocked me for six for up to a week.

If this does turn out to be diverticulitis then I can think of 3 major episodes where I would have benefited from treatment.

My plan is to keep to a healthy diet of fruit, veg, lentils, beans, seeds etc with plenty fibre when feeling well and then if I feel a flare up coming to eat lightly with no fibre, juice and soups etc until it eases.

@cittigirl how are you doing?

A bit better thankyou. I saw the gp this morning..about other stuff and she thinks it could be acid. I do suffer with reflux but this is in my stomach not my oesophagus 🤷‍♀️. Anyway I'm feeling better which is good. I've been trying to stay off carbs this week but yesterday I had pasta...maybe that helped a bit. Such a confusing diet for us sufferers. I've not got my head around it yet.
Thanks

How are you?

Glad that you are feeling a bit better today cittigirl.

It is confusing. I ate proper food last night for the first time , a small portion of filled pasta. I was still hungry but glad I stopped there as i was a bit uncomfortable for a short time.
Juice for breakfast again then a proper lunch. Feeling pretty good now. Definitely helping to eat lighter.

Hope you continue to feel better.

Spoke too soon. Risked a small coffee today and now feel very sick. Think I'll stick to fennel tea.

How are you today cittigirl ?

I've found my people at last
It's vile and it's not seen as an issue medically so you just have to suffer it out
