Breast mri

I had breast cancer in my early 30s (I'm now 48 and menopausal). I've just read that breast mris are a really good screening tool and that you can pay for them privately as they're not available on the NHS. From what I can gather the cost is about £700. I'm thinking of having one yearly 6 months after my mammogram (I have these yearly as high risk). I wondered if anyone else had looked into this ? I think I'd find it massively reassuring.

@woohoowoohoo I just came across this thread and noticed you hadn't had any replies. I also had breast cancer in my thirties and I have a breast MRI every 12 months on the NHS. I've got one tomorrow actually. I do also have another medical condition which puts me at higher risk of developing breast cancer, but they definitely are available on the NHS.

I actually spoke to a nurse at breast cancer care and came to the conclusion a yearly mammogram privately when I turn 50 (and enter the 3 year screening programme so no longer get yearly mammograms) would be the way forward. Largely because I couldn't afford to pay for further investigation but also because my breast is not dense and so a mammogram should work well. If it was dense and lumpy I'd be going for MRI.

I'm also waiting for genetic screening as I last had it over ten years ago, so if that shows anything I will have my remaining breast removed. Then I may consider MRIs but not yearly .

I will have a chat with my GP though as he was good when I asked for further genetic screening, so depending on the results there may be an option there.

Good luck with it, I hope you get some answers. It was 15 years ago that I had breast cancer, and they've only started doing the annual MRIs in the last couple of years. I wish you all the best.

Sorry meant to say, they also do annual mammograms with me. I'm not really sure why they do both the mammogram and the MRI, but I've had both today.

Sorry posted too soon I mean after a couple of weeks you can feel more relaxed after that level of surveillance.

I just worked out I am 14 years on. I'll ask about annual mammograms / mris when I turn 50 / if the genetic test brings up anything, thank you .
