My ds us 13 months old and has been ill on-and-off for a few weeks - most recently vomiting and runny but not-quite diahorrea poos on Friday. He is still off his food but otherwise now seems ok. Tonight his nappy had a dark colour in it, it looks like foundation, has anyone else had this? I'm panicking now about urine infections.

You need to get him checked out. It sounds like he is either very dehydrated or he has a slight blood loss in his urine. Don't panic btw, we all lose blood in our urine when we have urine infections, but obv in a little one it's more of a concern.

Does he have a temperature, is his fontanelle sunken or his eyes looking hooded and sunken. What about his mouth, does it feel dry? If yes to any of these you need to take him to A&E for a quick check up because they can indicate severe dehydration.

If not, can you take him to the docs first thing tomorrow?

NB urine infections can be treated with antibiotics fairly easily, however if it has progressed to a kidney infection he will need admitting and IV antibiotics for a few days to clear his system.

thanks for your post, am new to this and didn't realise it was there!
He doesn't have a temperature and doesn't seem to have a dry mouth, I can't find his fonatelle, think it may have closed over. He was crying real tears before which is probably a good sign re: dehydration. He's fast asleep now, I think you're right and I'll take him to the docs in the morning. My dp thinks I'm over-reacting so it's good to get someone else's opinion. Thanks again

Oakster, not being funny but mummies (often) know better than partners because we spend more time with the babies!

He may be crying because he is in pain if he has a urine infection. Did he cry when you touched his back? Is he taking any fluids at all. It's good that he still has wet nappies.

This might sound grim but it might be worth taking a stained nappy to show the GP if it's a very dark colour.

He took 5oz of his bottle tonight, and had some water during the evening. He usually has about 8oz though. Dp picked him up from nursery and they said he'd had fluids and did not seem concerned. He had been happy through the day, had breakfast ok but not much lunch. He cried a lot with dp before I got home. He was fine when I got back but started crying again about 10 mins after. Didn't notice him crying more when I touched his back but that doesn't mean he wasn't (if you know what I mean). A dummy soothed him and we gave him some calpol before bed. Thanks for the top tip I'll save the nappy. Think you're right about mummies knowing best too!

hi my DD suffered from urinary tract infections when she was smaller (about 6mo- shes 2 now) and it sounds like the way her wee went when she had one. does the wee smell funny?? it usually smells alot stronger- regardless of how much fluid has been drank. also his cry may be due to the actual passing of the urine as that will sting when it is passed. he wont necessarily have a high temp but that is a good indication of infection and if he is vomiting with it (DD did this aswell) he will need to see a doctor soon to get anti biotics and a check up. TBH it is not as common for boys to get urinary/kidney infections due to the urinary tract being longer but they are not unheard of so i would get him checked out anyway hope he feels better soon
oh and p.s you are not overreacting as you can never be too careful when it comes to babies

Thanks ei have just been and smelt his nappy (lovely!) and it does smell quite strong. I will definitely take him to the docs tomorrow. Poor little soul has only finished antibiotics 10 days ago for a chest infection and is still on eye drops for conjunctivitis. It's good to hear other people's experiences I feel such a novice at this being a mummy game x

sounds like you are doin a great job oakster FWIW it is also possible for the antibiotics he has just finished to be causing a touch of cystitis as this can cause the same kind of symptoms but would be treated slightly differently. dont worry about feeling like a novice as we were all new to the mummy game at some point and you are doing great {{{{hugs}}}} for you and your DS

Thanks everyone for your advice and reassurance. Off to bed now, hopefully I'll be able to get him sorted out at the docs tomorrow. xxx

FWIW, both my boys had the occaisional orangey/brown crystal/powdery stuff in their nappies from time to time and doc and HV both said it is fine.

Oakster · 28/01/2008 21:55

ooh it would be good if it's nothing to worry about. I'm imagining all kinds of terrible things. And I know I shouldn't aas it's the least of my worries but also worried how work will take the news that I'm having to take time off again - what a juggling act being a working parent. Thanks for your post it's given me hope! Will still get him checked in the morning but might get a better nights sleep now... x
