Advice - bowels

Hi - have NC for this but am not a poo troll, just not sure what is going on with my bowels 😳. Suddenly started with pain and discomfort last night, felt like trapped wind. Took some Buscopan which helped with the pain. This morning, had to go to the loo about half five and it was really strong smelling (sorry for tmi). Since then, I've been a further five times. The movements are solid, so it's not diarrhoea, but I'm experiencing mild pain and discomfort. Have eaten breakfast and lunch ok. Last BM was about twenty - thirty mins after lunch and was quite painful. Has left me feeling wrung out. Has anyone any idea what is going on? I don't want to take Imodium as it isn't loose / watery, except the very tail ends. So sorry to those reading - I know it's gross and tmi but not sure what's going on and hoping someone can shed some light...

Could you have just been a bit constipated? Constipation pops always seem to stink as they’ve been in there baking for so long. I occasionally get this - constipated but not really noticed other than a bit of discomfort then my body decides to deal with it and I spend a day having a clear out.

KangarooKenny · 30/10/2022 13:30

Have you eaten something you wouldn’t normally eat ?

HoboHippo · 30/10/2022 13:30

Thanks @ShouldntHaveBeenSoHasty - I have been a little constipated but not to the extent that I haven't been going at all 😳.

@KangarooKenny I had some non-alcoholic lagers yesterday, probably four coke size cans. I've had them before but probably not so many at once. I did wonder if it could be that but couldn't find anything about it causing bowel issues when I looked it up.

No I wouldn't take immodium.

Do you have any peppermint tea? That should help with the discomfort. Don't underestimate it's ability to help.

Constipation can be very painful, especially if trapped wind is involved, so I'd treat for both in your shoes (unless you have any other symptoms/indications of anything needing medical attention etc). Constipation can also lead to a little diarrhoea at the end of it.

A little gentle movement can help, so a gentle walk or a little light yoga is ideal.

I'm not a medical professional at all but have digestive issues myself.

In your shoes, I'd opt for foods that have a loosening effect on my bowels (in moderation of course, don't go eating kilos of gummy bears).

LeMoo · 30/10/2022 13:39

Also if you drank a lot of fizzy drink yesterday that could definitely have contributed to gas!

HoboHippo · 30/10/2022 13:46

@LeMoo thank you v much. My bowels just feel almost constantly "on alert" if that makes sense and I feel in quite a bit of discomfort.

@LeMoo I'm worried about eating loosening foods having already been six times today but do you think this is the right thing to do?

I can only say what I'd do in your shoes and going frequently isn't something that worries me as I have a condition which means I do so anyway - and I don't experience constipation.

But, in your situation, I would think that the frequency is maybe because I can't clear my bowels? If passing stool is difficult as well, because of constipation, then I would treat the constipation first.

It may help if you look up symptoms of constipation as this might give you more info.

Check anything you have drunk or eaten for sucralose, they started putting it in more things from when the sugar tax was introduced (its in a lot of squashes) and has a similar effect, took me a couple of episodes to realise😕

HoboHippo · 30/10/2022 15:08

Hmm the alcohol free beer contains glucose syrup and my dad made a traybake but used agave syrup instead of golden. I only had a couple of small bits of it. Could it be either of these? I've eaten the traybake before without I'll effect. I just feel so uncomfortable and really want to stop needing to go.

I think 4 lagers, alcohol free or not, would make anyone feel uncomfortable tbh

HoboHippo · 30/10/2022 15:14

They're only the 330ml cans so a little over two pints in total but maybe you're right. I don't usually drink so many of them on the rare occasions we get them in and definitely won't be again.

I know blokes can do pints of lager, but I struggle with a pint - they're so full of gas!

It will definitely have contributed to your discomfort, especially if already constipated- you probably have a fair of trapped wind to work its way through.

If you have peppermint tea, do try it, it calms the colon and I wouldn't be without in the house.

HoboHippo · 30/10/2022 15:47

I just checked, we don't have any (well, we do, but it's over a year out of date 🙈). I'll definitely get some more in. Thanks.

Could it be white bread? I suffer massively if I've had lots of carbonated water or cheap white bread...

Pixiedust1234 · 30/10/2022 16:29

Sounds like you have "overdosed" on artificial sweetners. They are everywhere now and it soon adds up. Anything non-alcoholic sets me off and you had four!

Let your tummy settle, eat bland easily digestible foods tonight and by tomorrow you will be fine
