Random feelings of dread

Every few months or so I have days when I get a feeling of dread for no reason at all. It sort of feels like I'm anticipating something really bad is about to happen, but never does. It's quite a scary feeling, and I can feel it too like growing from the pit of my stomach upwards, but only lasts about 30 seconds. Sometimes I can have it a few times a day but then I can go months without it. Does anyone have the same? I think maybe its stressed related but my friend thinks I should see my GP incase it is something else.

Yes. It’s happening more frequently to me- probably at least 3 times a week. I don’t know what’s happening to me; it’s horrible.

I thought it was hormonal (so did my Dr), so I started HRT. It hasn’t got any better.

I go through phases of having this daily and sometimes goes into full blown panic attacks. Propranolol has helped me x

Yes, I get these sometimes, I really relate to the feeling in the pit of your stomach that radiates up - like I’m about to have a panic attack but it doesn’t grow into a full blown one. It’s normally accompanied by a kind of ‘off’ feeling of general unease that lasts for the whole day. When I really started analysing it I’m sure it is connected with my cycles, like it sometimes happens sa few days before I ovulate, or I could be imagining it. The feeling normally goes away the next day - like the next day I can be suddenly feeling really calm and positive, and although my life can be quite stressful at times the kinda panic attacks don’t seem to be connected with stressful events IYSWIM. It’s really unnerving, especially when it happens when I’m driving the kids around .

Ahhh just realised the OP is from months ago!

MissingMoominMamma · 24/05/2023 22:00

@Jumpinginwithbothfeet - did you see your GP?

Jumpinginwithbothfeet · 25/05/2023 06:56

@MissingMoominMamma I didn't see my GP specifically about them although I have started on citalopram as found my mood has been really low more recently too. I did make a note on the calender every time I had them and they did seem to be cyclical although I don't have a period as on the coil. I'm pretty sure it's hormonal mixed with a lot of stress!! They've stopped since I've been on meds x

Both my sister and myself were afflicted with these - really distressing. I think they’re like a sense of doom and I wondered whether they were hormonal or perhaps dopamine related. It’s a horrible, physical feeling that also is intensely emotional. I’m now post menopausal and don’t have them - thank god

I get this a lot when the seasons are changing, most notably around Springtime and then Autumn. It tends to be in the evening time and the pang of horror descends and then lifts again fairly quickly.

WateryDoom · 25/05/2023 19:23

I got this a lot in peri/menopause. A feeling of 'impending doom'. I think it must be hormonal.

Rikitiki78 · 10/06/2023 03:24

Sounds like episodes of anxiety and depression. I suffer from both and have to be on antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds.

LunaTheCat · 10/06/2023 03:40

I used to get this regularly. Would last hours. Thankfully it is gone with citalopram!
