I am reaching the end of my tether and don't know where to turn:
I'm waiting for an operation on my foot.
My vision is becoming fuzzy in one eye
Have problems with balance and coordination. (Hospital appointment in April 2023)
I have a painful chest injury from a previous fall.
I have a painful hip
I am increasingly breathless.

I am in my late 50s and concerned that there is something connecting these issues. My GP have offered a telephone appointment in 3 weeks.

Is it time to give up on the NHS? Where would you go for help? I am open to any ideas - as practical, scientific or as woo as you like.

Ask your GP for a blood test to rule out diabetes, and anything else they think should be checked.

VanillaParkersBowl · 25/10/2022 15:27

Have you been to the optician about your eye?

MissVantaBlack · 25/10/2022 15:27

It sounds like something neurological. Do the problems with your eye and balance tend to come and go, or are they always there?

Jinja2BJ · 25/10/2022 15:35

Thanks for the replies. I have recently had blood tests. Definately not diabetic.
My eye problem began with flashes and floaters. My optician sent me to the hospital. They said the retina wasnt torn. It has been hazy for a few months now. Some days more than others.
The balance problems have come and gone over 5 years or so. It has been bad since last spring.

I feel like I need someone to join the dots.

Hmmm. The fuzzy vision in one eye, balance issues and falls might possibly be MS - don't panic, there are lots of effective treatments for MS now so it's not the feared diagnosis that it used to be. You're a bit older than most new MS patients, but still worth ruling out, I think. I'd ask your GP about this and see if you can be referred to a neurologist for a scan.

Jinja2BJ · 25/10/2022 19:12

@MissVantaBlack I can't deny that that MS has been a concern. I think that might one of the possibilities being looked at at the hospital appointment next April. But that's 6 months away. 😱😡
Is there anything I can do to speed things up?

It could be anything. You need to push the doctors more. You don't ask u don't get.

MissVantaBlack · 25/10/2022 22:48

April is a long way away, and it's a very long time to be worrying. Do you have private medical insurance through work/could you stretch to having an MRI done privately? If not, explain your concerns to your GP and see if they can refer you a bit faster. Like most things, it's best to treat MS sooner rather than later.

But try not to worry too much about the possibility of MS - there are lots of less serious causes for these symptoms, and as I said above, even if it does turn.out to ge MS, the treatment really is much more effective now.

Jinja2BJ · 26/10/2022 08:41

@MissVantaBlack I don't have medical insurance and I am self employed. I'm very worried about being ill right now. I can't even speak to a gp for 3 weeks let alone be seen by one.

Do your GP surgery offer "on the day" appointments if you phone at 8am? That might be a way to be seen earlier, if you mention your breathlessness.

Jinja2BJ · 26/10/2022 09:41

@MissVantaBlack
I tried that and a Doctor did call me back but he decided that my breathlessness was probably viral and I'm afraid that I went into a pathetic "yes Dr, no Dr, whatever you say dr ..." ridiculously grateful for a 30 second phone call.
I'm going to have to stop being so nice and start being a bit more demanding.
