DD age 22 (student house share) has had scabies for weeks. (Not STD related). Has now started antibiotics from GP. Supposed to take weekly but first dose has had no effect so far. She's done all the washing of clothes bedding etc. Now she's got 2 lotions: Permethrin Lotion and Benzocare Lotion. Will this work? Any other suggestions. Thanks.

I am a nurse and bought scabies home a while ago. Did two treatments of permethrin on everyone, washed bedding on 60+ and didn’t seem to work. Tried malothian (derbac m) and found it was better!
My sympathies, the itch is like nothing else!!

Thanks. I guess you couldn't see the mites?

@Calling are the things moving?
Could you post a picture?

No unfortunately you can’t usually see anything, there is often small bumps on the skin with “tracks” between them which is a tell tale sign!

I will try although they are small.

I don't have the tracks, though. Aaaagh.

These are the things that come off my skin when I rub cream and get them.

My dd also has scabies and has struggled to get rid of it. Endless treatments with permethrin and Derbac and endless washing of bedding and clothes. I have no solution other than persistent and rigorous weekly treatment.

lissie123 · 29/05/2023 12:17

Also she is a student in a house share

Calling · 29/05/2023 12:21

@dementedpixie I think they are body lice. Could have got them from a hotel or taxi recently.

@lissie123 everyone in the house must be treated.

I went to Boots the Chemist but the pharmacist had no products for me, its bank holiday Monday so no other pharmacies are open.
I went to a health food shop 4bought neem oil and tea tree oil.
Feeling lousy...

Unfortunately there is an issue with treatment resistant scabies in the UK at the moment. Treatment with Ivermectin treatment is recommended if other usual treatments have failed X2, although this may be difficult to access. Most GPs should have received notification about current treatment problems though.

It's worth noting that itching can continue for up to 3 weeks even after successful treatment, so worth adding in an antihistamine as well, to help with the itchiness. And general emollients, as others have suggested.

Please can I have hand hold!

realise this is an old post but reading there is a silent epidemic of scabies going on. You will read that first line permethrin is not always ineffective … but only after spending a fortune and traipsing around chemists everywhere looking. DS picked it up at uni and it’s a total pain and really bothering mental health. We are trying benzyl benzoate solution now that we mix ourself with vegetable oil / lotion to 25% strength and apply 1 x per 24 hours for 2 days. With all the bedding precautions that others have mentioned.

After the first application of treatment is it normal to get more spots? My skin seems worse after treatment then before and now I have random itchy spots popping up every where.
