Thyroxine

I'm sure there's people on here who know far more than me about this. I'm on Thyroxine as I don't have a working thyroid ( fried by radiotherapy a few years ago after a tongue tumour). Before I was diagnosed I'd lost 4.5 stone as a result of my treatment and was struggling to gain weight - I got far to thin far too fast. Once the doctor did a blood test I was put onto 100mcg of thyroxine and have been on that since and have put on at least 3 stone. Last blood test in August the doc reduced my dose to 75mcg as she said my level was 14 and should be below12. Trouble is I don't feel as well as I did on 100mcg. I seem to be putting on more weight and have low level constant anxiety that I've never had before (though there is work crap going on in the background that could be contributing, but I have never ever had this constant worry feeling before when stressed and I'm 62 so I'd have thought I would have). My doctor is pretty difficult to talk to. I know her attitude will be "I've told you to reduce it to 75mcg so do it". What will the effect be if I continue to take 100 ? Or should I do 100 one day and 75 the next ? I really don't understand how this stuff works !! Thanks

I think you need to confirm the level of what with your Dr. 14/12 is indicative of T4 but with a non working thyroid they shoukd be testing your TSH which should be under 4.

Too much levothyroxine leads to anxiety and weight loss; too little to fog and weight gain.

The British Thyroid Foundation has useful information.

I think you need to learn about the levels, your body's reactions and possibly ask to see a different GP in your practice if this one is unhelpful. Could you afford a private referral to an endocrinologist?

I am sorry to hear you have been so poorly.

@RosesAndHellebores thank you. That's helpful. She couldn't wait to get me off the phone when she called about my blood results. I had no chance of asking any questions. I did as she asked and feel worse.
