What does appendicitis feel like?

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 17:56

My husband has had really bad stomach pain since last night. Sort of central with shooting pains around his back and front. He thought he had trapped gas or something similar. So got home from work and took some rennies and cracked on.
This morning no better
He's got no appetite. He's been sick. Hes laid on the sofa almost curled up. Says sitting up feels very pressured. And that he feels breathless. He's never ill. Like I've been with him 11 years and can count on one hand how often he's ill.

I finally convinced him to call 111 who said that were on a call back list. But it could take 6 hours. He looks flushed and sweaty but his temperature is normal. Slightly low at 36.6
I'm half tempted to tell him to go to a and e but also we all know how busy they are.
All I can think is appendicitis which I've never had. So any help?

I would go to A&E.

strawberryice90 · 15/10/2022 18:01

My husband had appendicitis earlier this year and the pain you describe does sound similar to how his started. He saw a GP who sent him straight to the hospital, he also had no high temperature. He found the pain got a lot worse after eating and he looked really pale. When 111 do call back I'd ask them for an out of hours doctors appointment, if he gets worse I'd go to a&e

weathervane1 · 15/10/2022 18:01

I had a burst / perforated appendix for over 18 months while it was misdiagnosed time after time. On the end the paid was so bad I pulled part of the skirting board off our rented villa in Kos to bite down on. Ultimately I was airlifted home for surgery. I would describe the pain as the worst sort of griping, cramping stomach ache focussed on an area to the right of the body (but inside) and on a scale of 1 to 10, it was right up there at the top. It hurt so much I was literally doubled over in a foetal like position and pushing a couple of fingers into my stomach (just to the right of the stomach button) really hurt.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 15/10/2022 18:01

How does he feel if he stands on his right leg? Could he hop? Or would it be too painful?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/10/2022 18:03

It's dangerous if it bursts - DH was told that he probably would have died if he hadn't sought help when he did.

It may or may not be his appendix in this case, but why risk it?

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 18:03

He tried to hop, sorry can't remember who asked and he said it felt even worse. I'm tempted to tell him to go to a and e.

Sounds like it could be. Go to minor injuries. Less waiting than A and E. I left mine too long. It ruptured and I nearly died.

DrAddisonForbesMontgomery · 15/10/2022 18:05

I would get him to A & E too op.
Hope he feels better soon.

monsteramunch · 15/10/2022 18:06

Please just go to A&E, potential appendicitis isn't something to be taken lightly and the longer you leave it the worse it can get. Better you go and it be something else than put it off and have it worse or eve. burst outside a hospital environment.

Luncheonmeatsandwich · 15/10/2022 18:06

Stop making the poor man hop and get him to A&E.

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 18:07

We don't have a minor injuries which is so frustrating. Like the nearest one is the city over and we don't drive. He's gone to a and e. I feel so sick with worry

I had mine out recently and the pain started in the middle then moved to the right. If felt like a constant stitch in the right side with sickness. I would go to a and e when mine was removed it was very inflamed and it hadn’t been left for long

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 15/10/2022 18:09

I'm with the A&E voters.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 15/10/2022 18:10

Sounds like my DH. Don’t mess around with this, my DH was in early sepsis and had to stay in longer than usual.

A&E wouldn’t be overkill IMO.

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 18:25

He's got to a and e and now his signals gone and my anxiety is sky high. Keeping smiling for my little girl. He said he's going to connect to the WiFi and keep me updated

How was he walking? Was it with a stoop clutching his tummy? The doc diagnosed my son as soon as he walked through the door this way.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/10/2022 19:25

He'll be fine, OP. Try not to worry. He is in the best possible place.

FistFullOfRegrets · 15/10/2022 19:32

I hope you hear from him soon, even
though it'll be a long wait, he's in the best place.

When they took mine out at gone midnight, they said they were glad they hadn't waited until the morning as it was full
of sepsis & about to burst.

I was lucky that they did keyhole. the recovery from the actual
operation wasn't too bad really. The bloating was dreadful & that took a while to
go & recovery wasn't linear, so don't be surprised (if it is his appendix) if he feels good then crap etc.

let us know when you get some news x

QueenofLouisiana · 15/10/2022 19:40

My DS also had the "old man" stooping walk (not my description, that's how paediatrics described it before I am accused of rampant ageism). His appendix had burst by the time I got him to the paediatrics ward (referred straight there from GP). He had been seen twice, by a different surgery, in the 36 hours before that with awful tummy pains, I was told it was something completely different. I am still bitter about it- 14 years later. He stomach has never really recovered.

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 19:41

@sm40 he was walking like that and slightly hunched over.

OP posts:
sm40 · 15/10/2022 19:49

My ds also felt constipated and was sick and had a fever. I didn't think it was appendicitis because in all the tv shows everyone is screaming in pain.
He was operated on within 12 hours and that included a hospital relocation as our one was full! (Conversation was 'you look
Like you have appendicitis and by the way you won't be having the operation here!').
It's a very standard op and he should be out in a few days. Trust me he doesn't want it to burst and get sepsis (my ds didn't get that with his op).

MummyJ12 · 15/10/2022 19:56

Hope he’s ok OP.
His symptoms do sound very similar to those I had when I had appendicitis. Absolutely the right decision going to A&E.

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 20:52

He has WiFi! Though the poor man did try and check himself into children's a and e until they pointed out that as a 32 year old man he probably needed adult a and e.

He's had bloods taken and a urine sample. He's finally admitting He might possibly be feeling a little poorly and that maybe I was right to suggest a and e

Retsina24 · 15/10/2022 21:00

How worrying. Think it was right that he went to A and E. Really hope all ok and he feels better soon x

softplayfail · 15/10/2022 21:06

Side question but your all so helpful

My daughter adores daddy. Like worships the ground he walks on. She's only 2 and is definitely going to ask where daddy is in the morning if he's not back. Do I tell her or just say he's at work?
She's a massive daddy's girl. I'm blessed to get a smile some days.
