Oral thrush misery

hello,
I’ve got oral thrush as I am on long term antibiotics, I’ve not had it before but I’ve been run down lately so thinking it’s that too but anyway it’s miserable, I’ve had it nearly 2 weeks now, Chemist gave me the Daktarin gel that doesn’t seem to do anything but stops the pain for a little while, but the majority of the thrush is on the very back of my tongue and I can’t put there or try and brush it off without nearly being sick…. It’s making my gums hurt and my teeth feel weird and it’s just not going.
GP won’t see me until I’ve been using the gel for 2 full weeks, I’ve been gargling with salt water every day, I went to buy some probiotic tablets but they said I can’t have them with the long term antibiotics, I got some actimel instead 🤷🏼‍♀️ Just feel like it’s never going to go. I have a constant manky lump at the back of my tongue I am always trying to swallow.
does anyone have a magic cure please!

You need some Nystan from the GP. That’s the only thing that’s ever sorted oral Thrush for me. I really feel for you, as it’s so unpleasant. I’d phone the GP today and say that you’ve used the Daktarin gel for 2 weeks now and that the pharmacist has advised you to see the GP. Good luck! 🤞

Have you tried taking the oral tablet?

Afterfire · 14/10/2022 08:54

I am under an oral specialist for recurrent oral and oesophageal thrush due to autoimmune issues.

This is what I do / am prescribed -
Daktarin gel every night
Corsodyl mouth wash every morning - this will stain your teeth if you do this long term but the staining is easily removed by a hygienist
Fluconazole 150mg capsule every month - you can buy this over the counter, I would do this today if you haven’t already
biokault capsules 1 a day from Amazon
Occasionally if I have a very persistent bout of it the specialist prescribes a 3 month course of 50mg Fluconazole daily.

Try some of those things - some of them you can buy yourself.

And you can absolutely take probiotics of any kind with antibiotics just not at the same time - leave 2 hours between them. I take daily long term antibiotics for kidney / lupus issues and take probiotic tablets as advised by various consultants.

I called the GP weds and they were like call
back when it’s been two weeks and she said she Will put a note on my file to say so they will know it’s not 2 weeks yet ☹️
what’s the oral tablet? Can you buy that or do you need a prescription? Or can I buy nystan without a prescription too? I will
literally buy anything I can!

The Fluconazole 150mg tablet you can buy over the counter.

nystatin you’d need prescribed.

Fingers crossed it helps 💐

You can also - if you get it prescribed - gargle with a dropper full of nystatin added to 10ml of water. (It comes with the dropper). This gets right to the back of the mouth. Personally I’ve always found the Daktarin better as the texture means it sticks better but you could always ring 111 out of hours and speak to another doctor if you’re desperate and they might prescribe Nystain instead.

Agree with previous posters…pineapple can also be helpful something to do with the enzymes.

B1pbop · 14/10/2022 09:07

Have you tried cutting out sugar from your diet? Thrush thrives on it.

Didisquat · 14/10/2022 09:12

I don’t really have much sugar and to be fair I haven’t really eaten anything since I’ve had it as it hurts too much ☹️

Your gp is unhelpful!

Yy to the fluxanozole tablet OTC.

But you could try some tumeric mixed into live yoghurt and try eating that, to soothe your mouth. If the yoghurt is a bit think you could add some milk an warm it through to make a thick milkshake, and try and swish it all around the affected areas.

I bet it's sore. Also, take an ibuprofen to see if it helps with the swelling and pain.

YesItIsI · 14/10/2022 09:19

Gargling with apple cider vinegar is meant to help. Yeast likes alkali environment and the vinegar is acidic.

MinnyMous · 14/10/2022 19:45

I get oral thrust quite regularly as I am immunosuppressed. I nearly always have to have a course of fluxonazole, usually a 7 day course.
