Is anyone able to give me more insight on these iron blood test results. Is it severe ?
am I anemic ?
doctor just sent a text saying to take iron tablets but I recently went to the doctors with a concern about rectal bleeding which is now resolved but this has scared me

Hmm it's interesting your ferritin (storage iron) level is pretty respectable but your serum (circulating) iron levels are quite low, but that would make sense if you have had a rectal bleed.

I would have said just make sure you are eating plenty of red meat and sea food, to make sure you are getting a good level of iron (and maybe a vit C supplement along with it).

Iron pills can be quite unpleasant on the stomach, which is why I suggest trying dietary improvements first.

Thank you for looking. I also took this test the day before my period .
im just so worried that it’s bowel cancer but I was bleeding rectal my until I took fibre tablets

If the rectal bleeding has stopped and any sinister cause has been ruled out, then I wouldn't worry too much, with such healthy ferritin levels I imagine your serum iron will soon rise.

Thank you.

You haven’t included your Hb so no one can answer whether anaemic. The results need to be correlated with the rest of your results/any trend in results/your examination findings. Iron studies are a little bit more complex than MN often would suggest and your GP may well have given their advice with a more thorough understanding of the whole picture for you than anyone on here can.

strawberryandcreams · 10/10/2022 15:38

Has a doctor done a rectal exam to see what the cause of the bleeding is?

Banana2079 · 10/10/2022 15:42

Being anaemic because you lack blood ( haemoglobin) and iron Deficiency anaemia are two different things
You can be anaemic in the way of iron deficiency or anaemic because you lack heamoglobin - I was severely lacking in haemoglobin and I needed 9 pints of blood!
Unfortunately I have a thalassaemia trait which causes iron deficiency anaemia so I will always be anaemic but my haemoglobin is now fine.

you need to take iron tablets on an empty stomach with vitamin C for them to be absorbed if you take them with food to coffee or milk they won’t absorb, Unfortunately Iron tablets make me very sick so I now have to use prescribed liquid iron

Is that not what the second pic is?
they won’t explain a thing have to wait 2 weeks for an appointment

Yes they said it’s hemmaroids which weren’t bleeding at the time (as fibre pills meant my stools weee no longer hard so not triggering them)

Ah I see. So is iron deficiency abs anemia the same thing?
