hiya everyone, i’m recently trying to get more of a fruit/vitamin intake but i definitely struggle so i've started drinking NAKED Rainbow Machine which contains Apple, Banana, Kiwi, Blackberry, Mango & blueberry Smoothie. + VITAMINS. it tastes really good and i love it. the past week i've been drinking one a day and i feel better for it. but i’m not sure if it's benefiting me in any way? it does contain 26g of sugar for the full 300ml bottle. should i continue drinking one a day? is it better than nothing?

Worse than nothing IMHO. None of the fibre associated with whole fruit. Take a multivitamin. Vegetables are better than fruit anyway.

Juststuff09 · 08/10/2022 12:43

It's not as good as eating proper fruit I'm afraid. All the fibre is stripped out and you get a much bigger sugar spike and hit.
Juice is fine in moderation but really Id try and cut back to 150ml a day max and have a piece of real fruit

custardbear · 08/10/2022 12:43

I think you'd benefit more from just eating the fruit and veg, BUT let's face it we wouldn't so go with the smoothie and enjoy!

custardbear · 08/10/2022 12:44

... but also still eat normal fruit and veg of course don't just replace your normal 5 a day

MuddyLuddy · 08/10/2022 12:45

26g of sugar is just over 6 teaspoons .
Quite a lot. As others have said you won't be getter as much fibre as eating the fruit

elaeocarpus · 08/10/2022 12:46

For comparison a can of coke has ca 300ml has About 35g sugar

BorgQueen · 08/10/2022 12:47

It’s as much sugar as a can of coke or having a tea/coffee with 5 sugars.
Just eat an apple or a banana?

FlorettaB · 08/10/2022 12:47

If you’re having it instead of a chocolate bar, it’s great as it has no fat and more vitamins. If you’re having it instead of eating fruit or as something ‘healthy’, you’re conning yourself.

I read an article by Professor Tim Spector who measured his blood sugar after drinking a fruit smoothie and it was off the scale. So basically one of the worst things you could drink.

Stick to whole fruits, which contain fibre and slow down the absorption of sugar

SirCharlesRainier · 08/10/2022 12:53

I think the good things about eating fruit are: a) lots of fibre, b) it fills you up so you're less likely to eat other less unhealthy stuff, and c) it contains sugar but you'd have to eat loads of it to get as much sugar as e.g. a chocolate bar.

So with a smoothie they've stripped out the pulp/fibre, it's not that filling anymore, and you get more sugar then you'd end up with from scoffing a dozen apples. So worse of all worlds.

HauntersGonnaHaunt · 08/10/2022 12:57

Why can you not just eat more fruit? Do you have issues with textures?

Zezet · 08/10/2022 13:17

As others said, the fibers matter. This is not the scientifically solid way of putting things (!), but think of the fibers as little shells around the sugar. If you have sugar + fibers (like fruit), the shells will crack slowly and over a long period in your body and you will get a steady low amount of energy. If you juice the fruit, the shells get broken, so you are drinking pieces of shells and sugar that is flying around all wild and you get hit by all the sugar at once. Not healthy and not the point of eating fruit.

rubydoobydoo · 08/10/2022 13:37

I make my own smoothies in a blender using the whole fruit so still get the fibre in there - I add veg too, spinach and cucumber. And ginger and beetroot! Berries tend to be lower in sugar than a lot of fruit and very tasty.
Could you try that maybe?

My mil went to the doctor's where it was discovered she had alcoholic liver disease. She doesn't drink alcohol.
She did, however, drink a lot of juices and smoothies that she made at home from pure fruit.
She stopped having them, and now her liver is back to normal.
Juices and smoothies sound great, but they really aren't.
