If you have a goitre, do you have hypo- or hyperthyroidism as well?

As in the title really…!

I have a non-toxic multi nodular goitre.

I have had a few NHS thyroid tests over the years but always seem to come out in the average range.

I am wondering whether it is worth seeing a private endocrinologist for more in depth checks.

Or, is there no link between goitre and over/under active thyroid?

This is really confusing, that everyone's treatment is so different!
Is a goitre different from other thyroid swellings/masses/nodules?

My GP, and info I have found online, suggests that any thyroid lump should be checked by ultrasound as a minimum (and usually also biopsy) to rule out cancer on the 2 week wait pathway. Is it because my thyroid blood tests are normal that they seem more concerned?

Hi BlackInk, I hope you are well?. Not long till Friday till we finally get our scans. I am hoping they might tell me what they can see?. I am sick to death of the dizziness/breathing restriction, rapid heart beating, pain in body/neck/ear, lots of symptoms again and not sleeping well.I generally feel quite poorly....but could be the anxiety?!

From what I have read the Goitre is the thyroid enlarged? I think you can get nodules and cysts grow on the thyroid. I could be wrong but that what It looks likes when I have read on line. I think the reason why we are getting "overactive Thyroid" symptoms is because the groitre/nodules are covering it?. This is what people on Health Unlocked said when I explained. But same as you it is all so confusing!.

Hi @Jodie569 I'm doing ok thanks, it's been the slowest week ever!
My GP said that because my thyroid blood test results are all normal there's no way any symptoms I'm having can be related to my thyroid swelling.
I still feel the same I think, but the lump has definitely grown since I first noticed it a few weeks ago. What I don't understand is that some people have to live with huge goitres, but everything I've read says they should be removed if larger than 3 or 4cm. I guess we will find out tomorrow. I just hope I don't get brushed off again, and also of course that it's nothing too nasty for either of us. I just want to feel ok again, and I'm sure you feel the same.

hi blackInk, it really has dragged hasn’t it. Is your appointment a head & neck clinic one?. I had that first (felt like it was pointless). He put a camera down my nose and checked my neck, said he could feel nodules (I’m assuming I might have multi nodule goitre?). Then I had to wait for referral for this ultrasound. I’ve just had another appointment date come through for ENT in November.

Good luck for tomorrow I hope you get the ultrasound and answers.

them symptoms you have are thyroid related. They just go by TSH.
