Any miracle tips for getting her lying down without the persistant cough cough cough cough cough VOMIT!

She's had her puffer at 6:30pm
Tixlix nighttime at about 8pm
Buttercup syrup just now.

The coughing is still ongoing and she's been sick twice, once in the bed lying down and once on the lounge sitting up.

the mattress is propped and i have run out of ideas now.

we're both exhausted!

All I would suggest is propping the mattress up, but then you have already done that!

LittleMissNorty · 25/01/2008 22:10

Does she use a dummy - the action of sucking will suppress her cough....works with my DD (7 months)

pinkbubble · 25/01/2008 22:10

Is it croup? Just heard you say it sounds like a bark! Steam is the best thing for that! Boiling kettles.

nobodysfool · 25/01/2008 22:11

I had the same problem with ds about a month ago.On a fellow MN advice I tried a spoonfull of honey just before bedtime. It didn't stop the cough completly but it really helped.Hope your LO feels better soon x

Paddlechick666 · 25/01/2008 22:15

thanks everyone. i don't think it's croup but i could be wrong. every time this has happened before the dr has just said it's her chest and to give the inhaler.

i do have a humidifier but it's been unused (with water left in ) for a few weeks so am loathe to use it before cleaning it out properly.

never sure if you can get legionnaires from these things!

she threw up the buttercup syrup which is pretty much just honey!

thanks.....

alternatives to humidifier is a kettle in the room (keep the lever pressed down so it continues to boil), wet towels over a radiator, put her in the bathroom, open a window and put a hot shower on (luxury sauna in minutes)

If it is croup - really obviously a bark cough - then going outside in the crisp night air does wonders. Alternatively you can plonk her in the bath.

How old is she? My DD spent several nights in her car seat when she was about 6 months as that was the only way to stop her coughing. Don;t give her honey if she is under 1 (although I get the feeling she is older)

btw my DD2 has the same right now (hate listening to the constant cough and not being able to help )

funnybunny1 · 25/01/2008 22:26

when my ds 9 month had croup recently the gp advised to go into the bathroom and run all the hot taps / shower etc so that the room filled with steam and then put ds in the bathroom to breathe in the moist air. It did help him as he had a dreadul barking cough that made him sick.

Paddlechick666 · 25/01/2008 22:30

hi coby, thanks!

she's 2.3 and i've just done an emergency clean of the humidifier and fired it up.

was on my list of jobs to do today but kept getting distracted.

hope things get better with you soon too. it's horrible isn't it!

OP posts:
pinkbubble · 25/01/2008 22:32

Croup tends to be an awful seal bark! Hope DD is ok!

coby · 25/01/2008 22:42

Dah, bless her cottons . I hope you both get a decent nights sleep. It is horrible but I'm lucky in that my DD doesn't have asthma to cope with too.

btw love the 'emergency clean of the humidifier'. We had similar last november - the 'emergency where did we put the bottle steriliser? (works well as a humidifier)' - we have 4 different lofts and it was right at the back of the most awkward one to get into

Paddlechick666 · 26/01/2008 08:12

you have four lofts? good lord!

well, the cough/vomit continued till about midnight and then she finally went off.

think the humidifier really did the trick, can't beleive i didn't get onto that during the day yesterday.

hope you had a good night and here's hoping a good night ahead!

We had the same - by 12:30 DD2 was asleep. Is fine today but I know tonight she will start up again. Glad you both managed to get some sleep

Yes, four separate lofts - 'cornish design' only one of them will take DHs weight and I am at risk of getting stuck in the hatches as I get bigger with this pregnancy

Paddlechick666 · 26/01/2008 18:39

now you've conjured up a great visual for me - pregnant woman stuck in loft hatch with dh crashing thru a bedroom ceiling somewhere!

well, we are well prepared tonight. a day indoors and the humidifier, karvol plug AND olbas oil are fermenting away in the bedroom as i type.

seriously hoping for a less vomit filled evening as friend is over cooking me tacos and there is some wine!

wishing you a good evening.
;-)
