dd2 (15mths) just diagnosed with Measles, would really like some advice

Help. dd2 just diagnosed by the doctor. She has all the symptons and she asked if I wanted a blood test. Since it wont make any difference to the way she's treated I declined. The gp said that if she got any worse I was to take her straight to hospital. I asked her what "worse" meant so I could judge but was only given very vague advice. Currently dd2 has a temp of 39, covered in spots, is very floppy but does react eventually, has been sick, has a hacking cough, and a streaming nose. I'm currently giving her medised and watered down milk (she's hasn't got an appetite and at the moment my main concern is getting water into her as she's sweating a lot). Anyone have any advice?

Just for the record I was going to give her her mmr at 18 months .

wills- I remember having measles and felt really grotty for about 2 days- then beagn to feel a lot better. It is worth getting some vitamin A into her if you can- but has to be in the form of retinol. The easiest way is to gve cod liver oil (unless she particularly likes eating liver!), but that's pretty manky stuff if you're feeling poorly. Maybe a capsule opened and mixed with a favourite food (or even in the calpol or something). She won't need too much though, and don't worry if you can't- its far more important for malnourished children in the developing world.

Homeopathy can be very helpful for all the childhood diseases (and you don't need to worry about it interefering with anything conventional you give). Belladonna is good if the temp goes high, Pulsatilla if she's very clingy , Rhus tox if there's itching later. The homeopathic helpline can be useful as well although I don't have the number to hand.

Hope she's feeling better soon- don't be too alarmed (although obvoiously don't hesitate in getting her checked out ). Books dating even from the the 80's described measles as a mild childhood illness- the complications are very rare. BTW the most common complications are things like chest infections- which are easily treated by antibiotics- but will need antibiotics - so do get her to the doctor if she looks as if she may be getting an infection.

Hi Wills, sorry to hear about your little dd having measles. I nursed my dd1 through this many years ago and being very sleepy, off food, uninterested, etc are all very usual symptoms. Your one sounds as though she's fighting it off really well! My advice to you is simply to be led by her, if she wants to eat or sleep etc (which obviously I am sure you are doing). Best of luck to you all.
